Demi Moore Reveals Disorder She Battled As A Child

Demi Moore was crowned as People’s Most Beautiful 2025, and the cover star opened up in a revealing interview with the mag about a challenging part of her childhood.

“I had amblyopia, which is a wandering eye,” Moore revealed. She said by age 5, her eye had “crossed all the way in,” requiring corrective surgery.

Moore said she “definitely” had an awkward phase growing up, and the eye problem was a big part of it.

So what is amblyopia, exactly? The National Eye Institute says the condition, also known as “lazy eye,” is “a type of poor vision that usually happens in just one eye but less commonly in both eyes.” The cause is a breakdown in the way the brain and the eye work together. The brain’s failure to recognize vision from one eye strengthens the other, while the “lazy” eye progressively weakens. It is present in up to 3% of children, according to the institute.

Eye Disorder Wasn’t the Only Difficult Part of Demi Moore’s Childhood

Aside from dealing with the akwardness of amblyopia and undergoing surgery at such a young age, the “Indecent Proposal” actress says she experienced more tough times as a result of her mother’s alcoholism. She previously opened up to People about how she once had to revive her mom from an overdose.

Moore said her experiences with her own mother inspired her to be a better parent. The mom of Tallulah, Scout, and Rumer Willis told People she didn’t want her kids “to ever experience certain things that I had.”

The Golden Globe winner went on, “I really see now how important that is for our children to see us sad and see that we walk through it and get to the other side. It’s okay to be angry and move through it. There’s a lot I’ve learned and some I wish I had figured out sooner, but I also trust that it all happens in its right time.”

Demi Moore Previously Revealed How She Really Felt About Losing Oscar to Mikey Madison

Many fans were outraged when Demi Moore’s standout performance in director Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance” was snubbed by the Academy Awards in favor of Mikey Madison’s “Anora” effort.

The “Ghost” star said she remained “centered and calm” despite the disappointment. “I didn’t feel gutted. I didn’t feel any of those kinds of things. I just trusted, and am in trust of, whatever is going to unfold,” she revealed to Time in April 2025.

So what awards did Demi Moore win for “The Substance”? Although she fell short of the Oscar, Demi Moore won the award for “Best Actress” at the 2025 Critics’ Choice Awards, the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the AARP Movies for Grownups Awards. She was also crowned “Best Actress” by the Columbus Film Critics Association in 2025.
