Comedian Leanne Morgan’s skyrocketing career is no joke! And now her stand-up success has landed her on both the big and small screens with a part in a new movie, and her own Netflix sitcom.
Leanne Morgan Appears With Reese Witherspoon & Will Ferrell
Morgan appears in the new Reese Witherspoon-Will Ferrell comedy “You’re Cordially Invited” that just dropped on Prime Video.
Morgan plays Gwyneth in the rom-com about two people (Will Ferrell, Reese Witherspoon) trying to sabotage each other’s weddings after they were double-booked at the same resort. In an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Kimmel told Morgan, “There are a lot of funny people in it and I think you are the funniest person in it.”
Morgan’s New Sitcom Is a ‘Dream Come True’
But Morgan says her new Netflix comedy is her real dream come true.
On the show’s Netflix landing page, the 59-year-old says, “When I started comedy 25 years ago, my goal was to be a part of a sitcom. It just goes to show you it’s never too late, and dreams do come true. I’m a grandmama from Tennessee, and now I have a TV show with Chuck Lorre and Netflix. What in the world!?”
The “grandmama from Tennessee” will play a grandmother in the series as well. According to the show’s description on netflix.com, “‘Leanne’ is about a grandmother in menopause starting over after her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity, and Jell-O salad.”
Netflix has ordered 16 episodes of the series, which Morgan will not only star in, but serve as co-creator and executive producer. And she has seasoned TV talent by her side. Series co-creator Chuck Lorre has helmed hits like “The Big Bang Theory” and “Two and a Half Men.”
On the Netflix landing page, Lorre says, “If you’ve seen even 10 seconds of Leanne Morgan’s stand-up, then you know what a unique comedic force she is. The theme of starting over is universal, and I cannot think of anyone better to combine heart and comedy than Leanne. I knew I had to work with her, and I’m so excited to bring this story to Netflix.”
Netflix hasn’t set a release date, but you can expect it sometime this year.
Comedian Resumes ‘Just Getting Started’ Tour March 1
Between movies and shooting the new series, Morgan will resume her “Just Getting Started” tour. The next leg kicks off March 1 in Fresno, California.
Netflix has also ordered two more stand-up specials from Morgan to follow up her 2023 hit debut “I’m Every Woman.” Morgan will tape her next special on June 21 in Wilmington, North Carolina.
