It’s official; Disney and Pixar’s “Coco” is getting a sequel! Whether you’re filled with excitement or curious about what’s next, one thing’s clear: the original “Coco” left a lasting impact. But the big question is, does the story need to continue, or was the first movie the perfect, complete package? The ending of “Coco” was beautifully wrapped up, but hey, Disney does have a way of surprising us.
“Coco” Was Perfect the First Time Around
After being released in 2017, “Coco” resonated so deeply with its viewers, because it wasn’t just about the stunning visuals or the catchy tunes. The heart of the story drew people in and was relatable in a way many animated movies fans appreciated. It explored true family, the power of memory, and the importance of honoring those who came before us.
Miguel’s journey was about growing up, discovering the truth, and getting emotional closure. It was one of those films that didn’t really feel like it needed a sequel because everything was tied up so nicely that we walked away feeling content. The big question remains: is there more to Miguel’s journey to explore, or has that chapter already been seen?
Touching so many of us, “Remember Me” became an anthem for a reason and that emotional depth is part of what made “Coco” an unforgettable film. A sequel could have potential risks (i.e. losing that magic) but if anyone can pull it off, it’ll be Pixar. And how they approach it will be super important to whether or not fans connect with it the same way they did “Coco.” The challenge will be to recreate that same energy.
What Could “Coco 2” Bring to the Table?
With all of that being said, there’s definitely room for a sequel. “Coco 2” could explore more of Miguel’s relationship with his family. Or it could take another route and introduce us to the untold stories of other families through other spirits. The truth is Pixar created such a uniquely detailed, rich world that there’s still so much waiting to be discovered. The other good thing is that Pixar has a solid track record of making sequels fans were not expecting to love as much as they did the original films (i.e. “Toy Story 2,” anyone?).
Disney’s CEO Bob Iger said “While the film is just in the initial stages, we know it will be full of humor, heart and adventure,” per Variety, who also announced that the film is expected to release in 2029. “We can’t wait to share more soon,” Iger continued.
The biggest thing with making a “Coco” sequel will be whether it enhances the original story or feels unnecessary. If Pixar can find a way to expand on the themes fans loved from the first film without diminishing its impact, then “Coco 2” could absolutely be worth it. But if it ends up being more about nostalgia than meaningful storytelling, it might not live up to people’s expectations. Either way, keeping an open mind is important as we wait to see how “Coco 2” unfolds.
