Christine Baranski Gives Update on ‘Mamma Mia 3’—Here’s What We Know!

The sun hasn’t set yet on the sparkling shores of “Mamma Mia!” Paradise, and Christine Baranski knows it.

The ever-glamorous Baranski, who has played the sharp-witted Tanya Chesham-Leigh in the first two “Mamma Mia!” films, recently opened up about a potential third movie while strutting the red carpet at the Tribeca Festival. Talking to Parade, she confirmed there’s more than just wishful thinking happening behind the scenes.

“You know, I just got an invitation from [producer] Judy [Craymer] to go to the reopening of Mamma Mia! in August on Broadway,” Baranski said. “And I’ll ask her. I simply don’t know about Mamma Mia 3. I think Judy, the producer, really wants it to happen.”

And she’s not alone. In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Baranski added with playful certainty, “Soon, we’ll all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast. I hope.”

Yup, that’s all we needed to hear.

A Star-Studded Return & Possibly a New Goddess?

While Universal Pictures hasn’t officially greenlit the film, producer Judy Craymer has been fanning the ABBA-fueled flames for years. As of May 2025, she confirmed to Deadline that “Mamma Mia 3” is currently in development. “We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” Craymer promised. “We brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it, and huge friendships evolved.”

That’s certainly true for Baranski, who has shared the screen, and a whole lot of sequins, with the likes of Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård since the original 2008 hit.

Despite there being no official confirmation as to when the film will be released as of yet, there are speculations that the film will include several big stars who are having a moment this year.

Craymer has repeatedly teased the idea of pop star Sabrina Carpenter joining the franchise, potentially as a “goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep.” Seyfried is all for it too, telling ABC News, “If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen.”

Could we be getting three generations of fierce women in kaftans? We’ll take a musical, yes, please.

Will Meryl Streep Be Back?

Of course, one of the biggest questions swirling around “Mamma Mia 3” is whether Streep’s Donna Sheridan will return. After her character’s off-screen death in “Here We Go Again,” fans were devastated but still got a brief, emotional cameo.

Craymer recently hinted that Streep is not off the hook just yet. “Yeah, she said our after-shooting dinners were legendary,” Craymer told Deadline, noting that flashbacks (or maybe even a musical resurrection?) could pave the way for Streep’s return.

We know everyone would welcome her back with open arms…and probably a cocktail.

Fans, Brace Yourselves for More Sparkle

With no official release date, fans will have to keep their “Super Trouper” lights burning just a bit longer. But if Baranski’s comments and Craymer’s quiet confidence are any indication, it’s only a matter of time before we’re back on a sun-soaked island. Time for all of us to belt out ABBA and dance through another impossibly chic bachelorette party.

Until then, Baranski is keeping the spirit alive with her role as Agnes van Rhijn on HBO’s” The Gilded Age.” But even amid the corsets and stern social rules, she hasn’t lost her inner Tanya.

Amen to that.

So, dust off your platforms, pour yourself a fruity drink, and get ready, because when Baranski starts whispering about Greek islands and sequels, you know something fun is on the horizon.

Now playing in our heads: “Mamma Mia, here we go again…”
