Actors have lives beyond the spotlight, and sometimes, even in the face of personal loss, commitment to their craft comes first. Brad Pitt was spotted filming his upcoming movie, “The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth,” on Tuesday, August 5, in Gardena, California, the same day his mother, Jane Etta Pitt, reportedly died at age 84.

An obituary published by the Springfield News-Leader also listed August 5 as the date of Jane’s passing, though the exact time was not disclosed.

It’s unclear whether she died before or after Brad’s time on set that day. The actor has not yet publicly commented on the loss.

Jane Pitt Remembered as a Loving Matriarch With a Passion for Art, Family & Faith

Jane Pitt was born on August 13, 1940, in Memphis and later settled in Springfield, Missouri, where she raised a family with her husband William “Bill” Pitt, a former trucking company owner. She worked as a school counselor and elementary school teacher before retiring, and was known for her compassion, creativity & deep love for her family.

A public obituary described Jane’s life as “remarkable” and noted that a private Celebration of Life would be held at a later date. Brad’s niece, Sydney Pitt, daughter of his brother Doug, honored her grandmother in a touching tribute on Instagram.

“We were not ready for you to go yet, but knowing you are finally free to sing, dance, and paint again makes it a tad easier,” Sydney wrote. “If you knew Grammy, you knew she had the biggest heart… She was love in its purest form.”

Just Weeks Before Her Death, Brad Pitt Gave a Sweet Shout-out to Jane

Only weeks before her passing, Brad Pitt publicly honored his mom with a heartfelt moment during a Today show appearance in June. While promoting his upcoming Formula 1 movie, the actor smiled and told host Savannah Guthrie, “I’ve got to say hi to my mom because she watches you every morning.”

He then blew a kiss to the camera and said, “To Jane Pitt. Love you, Mom.” The brief moment, now even more poignant, served as a sweet reminder of their close bond.

Jane & William Pitt Raised Brad & Their Family in Missouri

Jane married William Pitt in 1962, and the couple welcomed Brad the following year. They went on to have two more children, Doug in 1966 and Julie in 1969, and raised their family in Springfield, Missouri. While they mostly remained out of the spotlight, Jane & William occasionally joined Brad for special events.

One of their most memorable public appearances came at the 2012 Academy Awards, where they supported Brad and then-partner Angelina Jolie. Despite their low public profile, Jane & William were known to be supportive, proud parents behind the scenes throughout Brad’s career.

Jane Pitt is survived by her husband William, their three children, Brad, Doug, and Julie, and a total of 14 grandchildren.
