Beyoncé’s Grammy Wins Make History
While the singer already held the records for most Grammy nominations (99) and most Grammy wins before Sunday’s ceremony, she had never won album of the year despite four previous nominations.
“I just feel very full and very honored. It’s been many, many years,” said Beyoncé during her acceptance speech. “I just want to thank the Grammys, every songwriter, every collaborator, every producer, for all of the hard work. I want to dedicate this to Miss Martell, and I’ll just hopefully keep pushing forward, opening doors.”
According to The New York Times, before Beyoncé’s win, only three black women had won album of the year in Grammy history: Natalie Cole (1992), Whitney Houston (1994) and Lauryn Hill (1999). And no black woman had ever won a Grammy for a country song until Sunday.
In addition to album of the year, the singer took home the awards for best country album and best country duo/group performance for “II Most Wanted” with Miley Cyrus.
