For years, Patrick Schwarzenegger has openly spoken about the stigma of being labeled a so-called “nepo baby.” As the son of iconic actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Patrick has worked hard to forge his own path in Hollywood. But, he admits that while his last name can open doors, it can also make it harder to be taken seriously.
But with his latest role in the highly anticipated new season of “The White Lotus,” Patrick seems to be rewriting the narrative. He’s earned his recent buzz through vulnerability, dedication to his craft, and yes, by going fully nude on screen.
Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Hilarious and Honest Reaction
Patrick’s daring performance didn’t just get audiences talking, it also caught the attention of his famous dad. In a joint interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors,” Arnold and Patrick sat down to discuss the business, the nepotism debate, and yes, that scene.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Arnold said. “I said to myself, ‘I’m watching your show, and I’m watching your butt sticking out there.’ And all of a sudden, I see the weenie. What is going on here? This is crazy.”
The legendary “Terminator” star then admitted the moment made him reflect. “Then I said to myself, ‘Well, Arnold, hello. You did the same thing in Conan and Terminator, so don’t complain about it.’ It was a shock to me that you were following my footsteps so closely.”
Despite the laughter, Arnold made it clear he was impressed. “Your acting surprised the hell out of me. Not that I didn’t know you were good. But it was just unbelievable, the kind of stuff you did in the show.”
Redefining Legacy and Shaking the ‘Nepo’ Stigma
Patrick’s performance has reignited the conversation around nepotism in Hollywood. The actor said there were real concerns behind the scenes about casting him. “Mike White said that it comes with baggage,” Patrick shared. “When you have successful parents like I do with you and Mom, there’s an added level of what people think. Mike was worried what others would say if he cast me — and they did care. People said I got the role because of you and Mom.”
Patrick admitted it took time to let go of the fear of being in his father’s shadow. “It took a while for me to get to a point where I was less worried about living in your shadow and more focused on doing it my way.”
Arnold’s response was classic as ever, saying, “I’m glad you kept the name, because now I can take credit. My son — the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
With bold choices and growing acclaim, Patrick may finally be proving that talent and hard work speak louder than a last name.
