Jack Nicholson Made a Sweet Offer to His Ex, Anjelica Huston, Amid Wildfires

Despite a legendarily brutal breakup, Angelica Huston and Jack Nicholson are still there for each other when it counts.

As the wildfires raged, Huston and her housekeeper were busy packing up her car with her three dogs and two cats. She was surprised to see someone calling. “The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him,” Huston told People. “It’s always a comfort when he calls.”

Nicholson was worried about his ex and asked her if she needed a place to stay. “It was heartbreakingly sweet,” says Huston. She didn’t take him up on the offer but wishes that she had. “I’ve gone back over it ­several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation,” she said.

It’s refreshing to see that Huston, 73, and Nicholson, 87, still have a strong bond after all these years. But she admits that with other obligations — and road construction — they don’t see each other as much as she’d like.

“Life gets in the way,” she said. “Also, for some reason, they’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house, so it takes hours to get to him, and that’s always irritating. I always managed to be late going to see him, which is very irritating for him.”

Huston and Nicholson Dated On & Off For Two Decades

The former couple spent 17 years together, dating on and off. Nicholson was notorious for his infidelities, of which Huston had been aware. “I loved him,” she explained to The Guardian about why she stayed. “I think in the world that I was living in, it wasn’t disrespectful. It was how he was, and it wasn’t so personal. I think as soon as I clocked that, it was all right, I knew how to protect myself. It didn’t make me happy, but I knew what I was doing.”

For Huston, the final straw was when he told her he was having a child with Rebecca Broussard. She went into more detail about her anger in her 2014 memoir, Watch Me. She admitted that, shortly after they’d split, she went to his office at Paramount Studios in a rage. She “beat him savagely about the head and shoulders. He was ducking and bending, and I was going at him like a prizefighter, raining a vast array of direct punches.”

Huston wrote that she felt “inadequate and bitter” because she could not have children. “I had endometriosis and had probably had it since my teens,” she wrote. “I had undergone a laparoscopy, followed by a hysteroscopy, but a child was not to be.”

But Huston found love again and — finally — a sense of stability. Robert Graham came into her life, and she described their meeting as “a strong attraction, but also a feeling of destiny.” They married in 1992 and were together until he died in 2008.
