Tyler, The Creator Drops Surprise Album ‘Don’t Tap The Glass’

Thanks to streaming, music doesn’t have to arrive one day a week

Surprise albums are all the rage now; everyone does it at least once. David Bowie started the idea with his 2001 created “Toy” (that would technically be released in 2021). Beyonce’s done it. People equate their one piece of knowledge about U2 to how — in an effort to promote iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch — Apple and the band released the album “Songs of Innocence” for all iTunes users, much to their derision.

No matter how you put it, when an artist announces then releases a new album, it can be very exciting.

Now, Tyler, The Creator can be added to the list of artists with surprise drops.

Cherry Bomb

Tyler is currently on tour with “Chromakopia: The World Tour” as he promotes his previous album. On July 18, the rapper teased something big coming for July 21.

A glass cube art installation was erected at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York before the rapper’s concert. A large figure resembling Tyler was placed inside of the box that also read “DON’T TAP THE GLASS.”

Fans were directed to DontTapTheGlass.com where the album is on full display along with merchandise and three proclamations:

“1. Body Movement. No Sitting Still”
“2. Only Speak In Glory. Leave Your Bagge At Home”
“3. Don’t Tap The Glass.”

Call Me If You Get Lost

The release of “Don’t Tap The Glass” has been welcomed among fans.

Commenters on Reddit recognize the influence Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and the Williams led groups NERD and Neptune had on the record. It also helps that the two musicians are credited on a few tracks in samples.

Another commenter said “This man took the criticism that ‘Chromakopia’ while not bad by any means wasn’t exciting or fresh. This album is a lot more interesting and experimental and I am here for it.”

“Don’t Tap The Glass” released on July 21 on all streaming platforms.
