Paul Simon Surgery UPDATE

Paul Simon underwent surgery after canceling a couple of shows toward the end of June due to chronic back pain.

The “Sounds of Silence” singer shared a post on his official Instagram account on Thursday, June 3, providing fans with a health update.

“As previously reported, Paul Simon underwent a surgical procedure this week to alleviate severe back pain that he has been experiencing for some time. Thanks to a great team of doctors, the surgery went well, as expected,” the post read.

The 83-year-old’s surgery was a success, but he needs more time to recover. He was previously slated to perform on Monday, July 7, at the Terrace Theater in Long Beach, California.

The statement continued, “However, it has become clear he will need one additional day of rest and recuperation to ensure he is able to perform at the top of his ability in Long Beach.”

Simon Revealed His Chronic Pain in June

The Simon & Garfunkel icon originally shared with fans on June 28 that he was suffering from severe pain.

“Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain,” the statement at the time read. “Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention.”

“Unfortunately we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don’t have the ability to reschedule them,” it continued. “However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates.”

At the time, the statement did not specify what “minor surgical procedure” would be completed.

The Icon Is in the Midst of a Tour

The 16-time Grammy winner is currently on his A Quiet Celebration Tour.

He announced he was embarking on a new tour in February. The tour spans 20 cities with over 55 dates. It began in April and will conclude on August 3 in Seattle, Washington.

He stopped touring in 2018 due to hearing loss, according to The Guardian.

In the October 2024 interview, Simon told the outlet he never said he was retiring.

“I never said I was going to retire,” he noted. “I said I was going to stop, which I did. I thought that with that band and the repertoire we were doing we’d developed it as far as we could. It was enjoyable, but I wanted to find out what happens when you stop.”
