Madonna Didn’t Like 1 Thing About ‘Desperately Seeking Susan’ – But She Embraced It For 40th Anniversary

Madonna resurrected a prop from her first major film role 40 years after the movie was released in the United States—and it was something she wasn’t initially a fan of when the movie made its debut.

In a post shared to Instagram, the 66-year-old singer posed wearing the iconic “pyramid” jacket from her 1985 film debut in “Desperately Seeking Susan.” The 66-year-old songstress gave a shout-out to the 40th anniversary of her first film as she shared shots of herself wearing the famous cropped jacket that was worn by both her and Rosanna Arquette’s characters in the Susan Seidelman film.

In the photos, Madonna posed wearing the glittery jacket with black pants, a white dress shirt, and black tie. “Happy Trans Visibility Day!! And Happy 40th anniversary of my first film- Desperately Seeking Susan!!” she captioned the photos. “We celebrated this weekend by attending a fashion show called, MOTHER-DAUGHTER-HOLY SPIRIT!!”

“Desperately Seeking Susan” had a limited release on March 31, 1985, and was released across the country on April 12, 1985, per IMDb.

Madonna Reportedly Didn’t Like the Jacket She Had To Wear in ’Desperately Seeking Susan’

Seidelman previously told The Hollywood Reporter that the look for Madonna’s character, Susan, was inspired by the singer’s own closet. “[Designer Santo Loquasto] was smart enough to just go to her apartment and go through her closet and pull out some stuff,” Seidelman said.

But Loquasto specially designed the famous pyramid coat that spawned a case of mistaken identity for Madonna and Arquette’s characters in the film.

“Originally Madonna didn’t like it,” Seidelman said of the jacket. “It’s weird because that pyramid jacket has become such a big part of her persona of that time.”

Several copies of the jacket were made for “Desperately Seeking Susan,” and Arquette took home at least one of them after production on the film wrapped. But in an interview with Vulture, the actress revealed she gave the prop away to her former boyfriend Peter Gabriel’s kids.

“I don’t [have it],” Arquette admitted. “I’d given it to Peter Gabriel’s daughters for them to share. And they were looking for it recently, trying to find it. I called them and they can’t find it. Life goes on. They probably said, ‘What do we need this rag for?’ They probably threw it out.”

“I should have kept that forever,” Arquette admitted.  “Why didn’t I keep that? It was so original and interesting.
