On July 4, Lewis Capaldi made a surprise return to the stage by showing up to do a duet with Noah Kahan at BST Hyde Park. Just a week prior, the singer had made his triumphant return to the Glastonbury music festival. This was monumental for Capaldi, who was unable to finish his 2023 set due to anxiety.
Capaldi has been vocal about his struggles with anxiety and Tourette’s, which forced him to take a long break from performing live. But on July 7, Capaldi announced in an Instagram video that he’s not just ready to return to the stage but determined to help others with anxiety of their own. The musician has partnered with BetterHelp to offer 734,000 hours of free therapy.
“It’s a thousand hours for every day I’ve been gone,” he says in the video. “So the importance of that number is that it’s a thousand hours for every single day that I have — well, since I last played on stage.” The Scottish singer then reflected on all the ways therapy has helped him in his life.
Lewis Capaldi Says Therapy Is ‘a Massive Part’ of Ability to Perform Again
“Therapy has been such a massive part of my last two years,” Capaldi said. “I guess, a massive part of the reason that I’m able to be a musician again. And I feel like if I can be a part of sharing that with other people, why not?”
However, Capaldi admits that the goal hasn’t been to change who he is but to accept all parts of who he is.
“I think I’ll always be an anxious person. I think accepting that that’s always going to be there for me is a big thing,” Capaldi explained. “It’s about how I respond to anxiety and how I respond to a lot of stuff in my life is how I — I don’t like this phrase — but, ‘show up for myself.'”
“I have neglected to look after myself in the past, both mentally and physically,” he continued. “And I have made promises to myself that I haven’t kept. I think, for me, it’s accepting that I’m always going to have this stuff there. It’s about how I respond, what are the steps I take to remain at base level.”
Lewis Capaldi Has Already Released New Music & Announced a New Tour
Capaldi seems eager to return to what he loves. Besides Glastonbury and the BTS Hyde Park show, he announced a new tour and released the new song “Survive.” He also appeared on “Good Morning America” to perform “Survive” along with fan favorites.
He recognizes how far he’s come since that day at Glastonbury two years ago. He also knows that you can’t control everything around you; balance must come from inside yourself.
“I always talk to my therapist about steadying my platform that’s within. Not every day has to be the best day I’ve ever had,” the “Someone You Love” singer noted. “I know there’s going to be peaks and troughs. But it’s all about just try to remain… I don’t like the word centered because it’s a bit more spiritual than I like to tread on. But I think just remaining steady and happy is, like, a nice thing.”
