Gayle King Reveals What Katy Perry Sang in Space

Gayle King revealed that Katy Perry sang a special song while they traveled together in space. In a live stream, the “CBS This Morning” host revealed that the pop singer belted out part of the Louis Armstrong classic “What a Wonderful World” during their journey into outer space in Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket. Perry previously promised that she would sing while in space.

“The best part was when we got back in our seats after Zero-G’s, Katy sang ‘What a Wonderful World,’” King said on the X livestream after the crew returned to Earth.

Perry previously promised a serenade of some sort. In a video shared via Instagram on April 13, the Grammy-nominated singer teased, “I think I’m gonna sing, sing a little bit. I gotta sing in space!”

Perry and King were part of the all-female Taking Up Space Crew, which launched early morning on April 14. They were joined by aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and Bezos’ fiancée, Lauren Sánchez.

Katy Perry Refused to Sing One of Her Own Songs During the Flight

Perry knew she would not sing one of her own songs during the 11-minute space flight.

“We’d been asking her to sing the whole time and she wouldn’t,” King told reporters, according to Billboard. “Everybody said, ‘sing ‘Roar,’ sing ‘Firework,’ but she said ‘it’s not about me. I wanted to talk about the world.’”

Perry explained that she sang “What a Wonderful World” in lieu of one of her own songs as a way to honor “collective energy” in the all-female spacecraft.

“I think that it’s not about me. It’s not about singing my songs,” the former “American Idol” judge said. “It’s about us. It’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging. And it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”

Katy Perry Has Covered ‘What Wonderful World’ in the Past

Perry previously performed “What a Wonderful World” for an iHeart Radio Living Room concert. When deciding what song to sing in outer space, something made her turn to the 1967 Armstrong classic.

“I’ve covered that song in the past and obviously my higher self is always steering the ship because I had no idea that one day I’d be singing that song in space,” she told reporters on April 14, per The Independent.
