Katy Perry had a heart-stopping moment on Friday, July 18, during her Lifetimes Tour stop in San Francisco. While performing her hit song “Roar” at the Chase Center, the pop star was seated on a flying butterfly prop when it suddenly malfunctioned, jolting mid-air and nearly sending her into the audience.
A clip shared on X by Popcrave captured the moment the prop unexpectedly tilted and dropped slightly, causing Perry, 40, to slip from her seat and stop singing mid-lyric. Visibly shaken, she clung to the structure while scanning the rigging above and glancing at the crowd below.
Eventually, she raised her hand to signal that she was okay before continuing the song, singing, “And you’re going to hear me roar / Louder than a lion…” as the prop slowly resumed motion.
Perry Breaks Silence After Scary Mishap
Later that night, Perry addressed the moment with a bit of humor. She said, “Not today, Satan,” as the crowd cheered her on!
She posted a blurry close-up selfie of her shocked expression on Instagram Stories, captioned, “Good Night San Fran.”
The quick acknowledgment was enough to ease worried fans, many of whom had been watching the terrifying moment unfold from the crowd and online.
Not Her First Stage Scare This Tour
This wasn’t the first technical hiccup Perry has experienced on the Lifetimes Tour, which launched April 23 to promote her new album 143. Back on June 29, while performing in Australia, Perry had another close call involving a metallic sphere used to lift her above the crowd. In fan footage from the night, the sphere unexpectedly tilted after rising, causing Perry to lose her footing mid-performance.
The singer gripped the prop’s cables to stabilize herself until the crew brought it down. The moment echoed this week’s mishap and has raised some concerns among fans about the safety of her more elaborate tour stunts.
Perry’s Lifetimes Tour Continues Through December
Despite the unsettling incidents, Perry’s Lifetimes Tour shows no signs of slowing down. She’s scheduled to perform next in Seattle on July 21, with dates ahead in Canada, Europe, and South America before the world tour wraps up on December 7.
Perry joins a growing list of performers, including Beyoncé, who recently experienced a similar mid-air glitch during her Cowboy Carter tour. Still, Perry’s quick thinking and resilience on stage proved once again that she’s a pro under pressure.
