Kali Uchis Opens up About Motherhood & Working With SZA

Karly Marina Loaiza, better known by her stage name Kali Uchis, recently shared her experience as a new mother and talked about her collaboration with SZA.

The Colombian American artist recently went on “The Jennifer Hudson Show” and shared how she felt the most beautiful during her pregnancy.

“It’s very hard to explain,” Uchis told Hudson. “I mean, you know, you’re a mom, everyone’s different. Everyone has their own experience. It was definitely the hardest year of my life ever, but also the most beautiful, the most transformative. For me, I felt, I don’t know how you felt, but I felt more beautiful than I ever felt in my life when I was pregnant, and then as soon as I gave birth, I just felt disgusting, and I was like, you know, I had to get used to this whole new body and this whole new sense of self.”

Uchis shared she had to find herself again as it was a journey.

“But you’re also so grateful,” she continued, “and you have this little human being that is a piece of you and a part of you here in this world, and it’s so amazing. Just still, sometimes me and my man [Don Toliver], we just look at our baby and we’re like, how is he here?”

Uchis and Toliver, an American rapper and singer-songwriter, announced the birth of their son in March 2024.

The “telepatía” singer noted her son’s interest in the world of music.

“He is always trying to play piano,” Uchis shared. “He always wants to dance and sing, and whenever he hears me singing, he always tries to join in and sing with me.”

Uchis shared her son has already been on the road with her and Toliver.

“We’ve taken him on tour already,” she said. “My man did a tour some months ago, and we took him on that tour, and…I plan to take him on my tour, so it’s fun. It’s kind of like giving him a little field trip, and he doesn’t understand what’s going on, but he’s so excited to just see new things every day. And he loves cars. So he loves seeing all the cars on the road and all the trucks when we go into the venues and he loves it.”

Hudson noted Uchis has collaborated with many amazing artists in the industry such as SZA, who sang in Spanish with Uchis. Hudson asked how did the R&B artist do.

“She did really good,” Uchis shared. “I don’t know if she told you this, but she actually does speak some Spanish, and she has a good accent. She really can speak Spanish. And so, she surprised me when I–you know I helped her write her parts, but she kind of, she already had the tongue you know she could already roll her R’s and she already had her little Dominican accent.”
