Kevin Hart is better known as a comedian but he also has a bit of underlying musical prowess.
There are points when he goes by the alias Chocolate Droppa. Under the name, Hart is signed to Motown Records and has released a full mixtape.
The record, titled “Kevin Hart: What Now (The Mixtape Presents Chocolate Droppa),” is based on the comedian’s stand up special of the same name. It features other artists including 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Trey Songz and others.
Hart’s Droppa joined NPR’s famed Tiny Desk Concert series in order to perform four brand new songs with The Band of Brothas playing live instruments alongside the music.
Let The Big Dog Eat
The concert begins with Hart starting up the song “ATL Rap.” However, he only gets a few verses out before stopping his backing track.
He tells the crowd they’re not ready before letting them know why he’s clad in all Black clothing.
“At the end of the day, I’m dressed in all Black because it’s a funeral. It ain’t mine, it’s theirs,” he says to a laughing crowd. “At the end of the day, it’s headshots. If the target fits, wear it.”
Other songs performed in the set include “West Coast,” “Love Song,” and “Don’t [expletive] With Dem.”
“At the end of the day, I got a story. I’m trying to tell that story,” Hart tells the crowd. “I’ve been gone for a minute. Every time I see people, every time I run up on somebody, the first thing they say is ‘Droppa, where you been? When you gonna give us more?’ The question is now I guess. You ask, you shall receive.”
Hart’s Droppa character has not released anything since 2016.
“I hear a lot of people talking. I hear a lot of rappers walking. But they’re not barking. I bark,” Hart says, pacing. “I’m a big dog. And I want to eat out the big bowl. Right now, I see these rappers eating out the big bowl. But you know what a big dog does? A big dog takes that bowl.”
“I’mma take that bowl and I’mma eat out that bowl. You gone watch me eat out that [expletive] bowl.” Hart proceeds to loudly mime eating. “That’s what big dogs do.”
New Album Coming Soon
Hart also announced a new album is on the way. Although, it’s unclear if that was a joke or not.
The character of Chocolate Droppa also made an appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”
While he’s not given much of a background, Droppa is said to be from Bismark, North Dakota. He’s also rapped with or battled many other musicians including Nick Jonas, who went by Vanilla Wafer for the occasion.
