Bobby Brown Opens Up About Losing Whitney Houston: ‘It Doesn’t Go Away’

While appearing on “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” Bobby Brown opened up about his healing process after the tragic deaths of his children, Bobby Brown Jr. and Bobbi Kristina. Brown also reflected on the loss of his ex-wife, legendary singer Whitney Houston. Brown revealed he had to undergo intensive therapy to process the deaths of his family.

Bobbi Kristina passed away at the age of 22 in 2015 due to a combination of drug intoxication and drowning. His son, Bobby Brown Jr., died in 2020 from a drug overdose at the age of 28. Houston tragically passed away in 2012 at the age of 48 after being found unresponsive at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Her death was ruled an accidental drowning caused by atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use.

Brown and Houston were married from 1992 to 2007. “She taught me a lot about love and living right. She is definitely loved and missed in my heart,” he said about Houston.

The 56-year-old singer, songwriter, and actor told Hudson he has been seeking professional help to “work through” the grief that has followed him for years. “Lots of prayer, first and foremost, that absolutely took me to the point where I accepted therapy in my life,” he said. “I accepted going to a therapist and really working out all of the issues that I had within me.”

Brown shared that he received a great deal of help and support from his wife, Alicia Etheredge-Brown. He also heavily relied on his five children to take life day by day. His family was there when he “wasn’t feeling right,” especially during incredibly difficult times.

“Also, just family…being there for me when I was down and when I wasn’t feeling right and when times got hard,” he added. “They’re still there because it doesn’t stop. It’s not like it just goes away. It’s gonna be with you forever, but it’s about dealing with it and really paying attention to yourself. Paying attention to how you’re feeling that day and letting somebody know how you’re feeling that day. You know, not keeping it inside.”

Houston was one of the best-selling music artists of all time, known for her powerful voice and hits such as “I Will Always Love You” and “How Will I Know.” The latter became the singer’s second No. 1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100. She earned six Grammy Awards and 22 American Music Awards and sold over 200 million records worldwide. Her legacy continues to influence generations of artists, several of whom have been influenced by her artistry. Taken too soon, the powerhouse is remembered by fans all around the world, who still honor her career and legacy daily.
