When it comes to business, Tina Knowles knows when to mind her own with superstar daughter Beyoncé!
The matriarch of the Knowles family sat down with Meghan Markle for a bonus episode of Meghan’s podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder.”
And while Tina Knowles may be best known as the Queen Bey’s mom, she’s also a businesswoman and author in her own right.
Knowles opened Houston hair salon Headliners in 1990, and told Meghan she “learned to be a boss” through her decades in the hair industry. “I think that you start your business and then you find yourself,” she said during the episode. “It gives you confidence that you didn’t have before.”
But confidence or no, when she and her Grammy-winning daughter disagree about a business decision, Tina defers. “We have disagreements with things but it’s her business,” Tina told the Duchess on her June 3 podcast. “I’m just helping. Overall, we get along really, really well. So, if we have a disagreement, it’s her business, so she gets to win.”
Meghan Markle Asks for Advice About Working With Princess Lilibet
Meghan took the opportunity to ask Tina Knowles for insight on working with your daughter. She and Prince Harry’s daughter Lilibet turns 4 on June 4.
“You’ve worked with the girls for years, but this is a different type of endeavor,” said Meghan, “Just curious, I mean, I wonder if one day I’ll be in business with Lili and we’ll be building something?”
Knowles replied, “There are difficulties sometimes, because if you’re dealing with your child or you’re dealing with your mother, you know, you have disagreements. And you have to—I’m the one to always cave,” Knowles admitted laughing. “If my kids are mad at me, I can’t take it. I’ll cave, I’ll apologize.”
But Knowles also told Meghan working with your children is “the best.” And no one is a bigger cheerleader than she is. “I tell them every day, since they were little girls: You belong anywhere you choose to be.”
Tina Knowles Podcast Was an Unexpected Bonus
Meghan Markle had already wrapped the first season of her “Confessions of a Female Founder” podcast when the opportunity arose to interview Tina Knowles.
What was intended to be the final episode of Meghan’s eight-part podcast was released on May 27. In that episode, she spoke to Sara Blakely, founder of shapewear clothing company Spanx.
But in an Instagram post, podcast production company Lemonada Media wrote, ‘We had just wrapped Confessions of a Female Founder and packed up the mics – until a call came in that we couldn’t ignore. On the line was one of the most influential and inspiring matriarchs in culture today. Naturally, we hit record.’
Meghan also teased the bonus episode, saying, ‘Next week, we’ve got one more very special interview for you. A bonus episode. Because when a matriarch calls, and when this matriarch calls, oh, you answer. This one is so special, y’all.’
