Turnstile, Lil Wayne, Addison Rae – Here’s This Week’s Best New Music [Listen]

What a week it’s been in terms of music. Not only is there a diverse selection of music out, a majority of it is completely new. Yes, there’s a good amount of re-releases and remixes. But, all in all, it’s been a solid week for records and singles.

Turnstile, “Never Enough”

Turnstile brings its mix of modern day punk and 2000’s alt rock sound back for a fourth album that sets itself apart from the likes of most other rock bands around. “Never Enough” features the classic guitar and percussion sounds mixed perfectly with keyboards and synthesizers – no single taking over any other. Songs like the title track fit in with more pop-driven records like “I Care.” “Never Enough” is a joy to listen to.

Lil Wayne, “The Carter VI”

Hinted at as the rapper’s last record, “The Carter VI” explains why Lil Wayne has been able to be around for so long. The samples and references – like in the third track “Bells,” which harkens back to LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells” –  throughout the album are on point, citing Wayne’s strengths in the mixtape space. A feature from U2 singer Bono also heightens the work. The weaknesses are there though. As with most modern day rappers, the album lacks a cohesive narrative. The slower tracks are just that. And many of the other features are lackluster.

Addison Rae, “Addison”

TikTok star turned singer Addison Rae debuts her first, self titled album that features a song that feels like it’s been out for years in “Diet Pepsi.” Joined by a handful of other drip fed singles like “Aquamarine,” “High Fashion,” and “Fame Is a Gun,” Rae’s album brings together the poppy, dance inspired moment that top 40 music is currently experiencing. “Addison” is short and sweet yet easy to digest.

Pulp, “More”

Pulp returns after 24 years with an album that lives up to its name. “More” is more of Pulp, the alternative, Britpop band and more of its excellent music. The band reunited a mere three years ago after several stints of breaking up and getting back together. Songs like “Spike Island” and “Farmers Market” really bring home the idea that while time has marched forward, their sound hasn’t. And it still works.

Little Simz, “Lotus”

Little Simz is timeless. Her vocals are so crisp and fresh. The production is on point. The beats are so raw. She makes hip hop feel like there’s still life in the genre. It may sound basic but the lead track and single “Thief” can sell any non-fan on the British rapper. “Lotus” – the rapper’s sixth album – feels like she still has more to give; that’s a good thing.

Other Mentions

Rascal Flatts, “Life is a Highway: Refueled Duets”

Cynthia Erivo, “I Forgive You”

Sabrina Claudio, “Fall in Love with Her”

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, “Phantom Island”

Soccer Mommy, “Evergreen (stripped)”
