Clipse Reunite, Wet Leg Gets Punchy & Noah Cyrus Goes Country: Best New Music This Week

Just after the biggest summer holiday music releases are starting to ramp up. Not only that, there are a few surprises too.

An indie band drops their biggest album yet. Pusha T reteams with his brother. And a Cryrus sibling comes with all caps. Find out what you should check out below.

Clipse – “Let God Sort Em Out”

It’s been 16 years since Pusha T and his brother, No Malice, released a joint album. Here we are with “Let God Sort Em Out” – an old school take on rap with help from producer Pharrell Williams. This record stands out among every other hip-hop release in recent memory due to Pusha and Malice delivering a message (they lost their mother and rap in her honor) and the circuitous way in which it was released. Disputes with record labels, other rappers (including Kanye and Jim Jones), recording in France and more led to the record being self released. Stand outs include the title track featuring Nas and one of Williams’ many drop ins in “E.B.I.T.D.A.”

Wet Leg – “moisturizer”

Led by the personable Rhian Teasdale, Wet Leg returns after two years away with an album that is anything but moist. This is indie music to a T. Tunes like “Catch These Fists” and “Pokemon” stand out for their bouncy deliveries, making listeners feel like they’re in the latest low budget Netflix flick. Songs like “Jennifer’s Body” will be played until the vinyl is worn out in a record store. “Moisturizer” is a record that is short, sweet and works. It’s a strong second outing for the British indie rockers.

Open Mike Eagle – “Neighborhood Gods Unlimited”

Open Mike Eagle is known to people who like low spoken rap that is easily referred to as “art rap.” Mike’s albums are plentiful and good listens. He makes music for those who don’t want the same braggadocio mess that comes with Top 40 rap. It’s no wonder why the wider listening populace will have a hard time finding out more about “Neighborhood Gods Unlimited.” Advertising was minimal, which fits right in with every other project the rapper has produced. New fans won’t be born out of this record but that shouldn’t deter anyone who wants to break out of the mold.

Noah Cyrus – “I WANT MY LOVED ONES TO GO WITH ME”

All of the Cyrus children continue to prove themselves very capable musicians. Noah is no exception yet she is an outlier. While Miley has trended towards pop, Braison is more of a traditional Nashville act, and Trace is a rocker (Brandi doesn’t sing), Noah falls into folk singer of sorts with country twang. “Way of the World” with Ella Langley pits her in the country lane as the two duet about how life goes. Then there’s “Don’t Put It All On Me,” a haunting tune with Fleet Foxes that has a melancholy nature and pure TikTok sad girl energy. Cyrus is cementing herself at a point where she can diverge from the traditional pop artists to make a bigger name for herself.
