Writer’s Block Turned Into Hit: Benson Boone Talks “Moonbeam Ice Cream”

Benson Boone is gearing up to drop his new album “American Heart” on June 20 and fans are already buzzing with excitement.

Boone, 22, made an appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” on June 4 and gave fans insight behind his hit song “Mystical Magical”.

Behind Moonbeam Ice Cream

The pre-chorus of the song includes the words “moonbeam ice cream” which many have wondered what it means. 

“Once you know what my love’s gonna feel like/ Nothing else will feel right, you can feel like/ Moonbeam ice cream, taking off your blue jeans/ Dancing at the movies, ’cause it feels so”

When asked what “moonbean ice cream” means, the singer shared he doesn’t know either.

“I write pretty much everything me and this guy, Jack [LaFrantz],” Boone told Fallon, “and I love Jack, but we are very unserious when we’re together….We connect so well, and we were just kind of having a day. It was like a weird, you know, kind of a whimsical day. I’ve never used that word before…..But you know, as we get on through the session, we kind of came to, like what’s called writer’s block, and it’s when you have a melody already, but like, you cannot think of a lyric. Like you just, like, you just beat it up and beat it up.”

Boone went on to reveal the story behind the lyrics many have been curious about.

“And Jack’s sitting there,” he continues, “and we’re kind of goofing off, and he just goes, ‘you know, what, if you just did this,’ and it looked like he was gonna say something really good, and we’ve been sitting there for an hour. I’m like, ‘This is it’, and he was like ‘Moonbeam ice cream, taking off your blue jeans’, and I was like, ‘You know what?’… but it was a placeholder for the day. And then we went home and listened to it, and I was like, ‘You know what? Moonbeam ice cream.’”

Boone is hitting the road for his “American Heart” arena tour kicking off on Aug. 22 in Minnesota.

The highly anticipated tour sold out in 9 seconds.

The “Beautiful Things” singer will also be making his way to Europe and the United Kingdom.
