Fans eagerly awaiting news about “Mamma Mia 3!” will have to wait a bit longer but Amanda Seyfried is willing to drop some secrets from the sets of the previous two movies.
While dropping by NPR’s “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!” quiz show, Seyfried was asked about her time working on the “Mamma Mia” franchise by host Peter Sagal.
Seyfried Looks Forward to a Third Movie just to Have Fun
“…This might be urban legend, it might be true,” Sagal begins. “We have read that, like, when you were making that movie and its sequel in these beautiful places, that the entire cast was drunk the entire time.”
Seyfried boldly and quickly answers “Yeah.”
The live audience erupts in cheers as Seyfried goes on to clarify.
“I mean, not the entire time,” she says. “No, it really was debauchery.”
A Sort of Confirmation from a Fellow Cast Member
The rumor that the cast was tipsy the entire time came from a TikTok user who parsed out a clip from “The Making of Mamma Mia” documentary. In it, producer Gary Goetzman says the cast was given ouzo, a Greek liquor, on a daily basis.
“Mamma Mia” actress Christine Baranski denied there was drinking on the actual set of either movies. In an interview with Collider, the actress told the version of events she knows.
“No, there wasn’t ever Ouzo on set,” she begins. “It was that Pierce Brosnan wanted to take us all to dinner one night near the end of the shoot, the first ‘Mamma Mia!,’ and we had dinner and then we went to hear some jazz music somewhere. And we started drinking this – it’s not called Ouzo – it’s Cipro or something. But that sounds like the antibiotic.”
Collider went on to confirm the cast was drinking Tsipouro.
“Actually, those images that came out a while back of us in our most drunken state, at some party where we did karaoke in Skopelos,” Seyfried tells NPR’s Sagal. “It just looks like the most fun anyone could ever have, especially because Meryl Streep is at the center of every photo.”
Seyfried keeps the memories of her time on set close to her heart.
“I wish I could say, oh, it wasn’t that fun,’” Seyfried continues. “But my grandmother got drunk that night. It was a memory that I will never [forget].I just hold it so close and I really look forward to a third. So just so we could keep getting drunk together.”
Whatever went down on set lead to two memorable movies and fans itching for a third.
