‘The Challenge’ Fan Favorite Announces Retirement

After more than a decade away from reality TV, Frank (Sweeney) Fox made his long-awaited return to “The Challenge” in the “All Stars Rivals” spinoff. Teamed with former “Real World: San Diego” roommate Sam McGinn, Frank was determined to reclaim his competitive reputation—and he nearly did, finishing third after a grueling final.

But as the season wrapped, the bigger headline wasn’t his impressive gameplay. It was his announcement: Fox is officially retiring from “The Challenge,” for good.

Frank Fox Says ‘This Is It’ For Him on ‘The Challenge’

Speaking on The Zach Nichols Podcast, Fox opened up about why he chose to return after 12 years away—and why this will be the last time fans see him on the show. “This is it for me,” he told Nichols and his co-host. “This isn’t the Leroy Garrett school of retirement.” Fox confirmed the news was an “exclusive,” shutting down any hopes of a future appearance on MTV or Paramount+.

Fox explained that his decision to compete again was motivated by a need for personal closure. “It was the ‘What if?’ for me,” he said, referencing unfinished business he felt after winning “Battle of the Seasons” years ago. While Fox and McGinn didn’t win “Rivals,” their third-place finish was hard-earned, especially as his partner pushed through a painful injury during the final.

Nichols, who competed with Fox in their original “Challenge” season, had nothing but praise. “If the final came down to CT, Bananas, Jordan, and Frank—I’d put my money on Frank,” Nichols said.

Fox always had that competitive edge, even when it led to friction with his teammates. But as Nichols explained, it stemmed from Fox’s deep desire to win—not personal animosity.

Fox Says His Return For ‘All Stars’ Included ‘Really Dark Stuff’

Fox’s return wasn’t without its challenges beyond the competition itself. On the podcast, he revealed that stepping back into the spotlight came with a wave of negativity that affected his life offscreen.

“Some things happened that could affect my (expletive) livelihood—my day-to-day real life. Some really dark stuff,” Fox shared. “I just can’t have that.”

Though he didn’t go into detail, Fox said those issues were quickly “shut down,” but left a lasting impact. “I know how I show up as a friend, as a husband, as a community member. And the things that have been said—I just don’t need that,” he added. Instead, he’s choosing to focus on what matters: the positives in his life and a future that doesn’t involve reality TV cameras.

Despite the behind-the-scenes strain, Fox’s gameplay this season reminded fans why he’s one of the most socially savvy and physically capable competitors ever to join “The Challenge.” His return may have been brief, but it was impactful.
