Khloé Kardashian Confesses That It Was Hard to Have Her Mom as Her Manager

Most people have heard some version of how “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” came to be. Kim Kardashian wanted to do a reality show, and Kris Jenner eventually approached Ryan Seacrest about filming her family. But, in a recent sit-down with her mom on her Khloé in Wonder Land Podcast, Khloé admits that she and Kourtney were two family members who were not as excited about the prospect of filming their lives.

Khloé Originally Didn’t Want to do the Show

As the two chat about Khloé’s childhood, Kris reminisces about her spicy, wild teenage years and the conversation begins to drift towards the beginning of “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” Kris claims that she sought out a reality show for the family because she had bills to pay. Khloé, on the other hand, remembers vehemently not wanting to do the show.

While Kris and Kim had an easy rapport and working relationship, Khloé struggled. “I also think our dynamic at the beginning, like, it was challenging. I know more so for Kourt and I, for you to be our manager at first, cause we were like, what are you talking — like, you’re not going to boss us around,” Khloé reminded Kris. She goes on to recall the back-and-forth that ended with Kris telling them, “‘It’s only going to be one season; it’s not a big deal; just do the show.'”

Khloé Admits it Took Years to Get Where They Are Now

Kris looked at the reality show as a way to draw eyes to their other businesses, such as Dash, which Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé owned. But as Kris acted more and more like her boss, Khloé bristled. “It was hard, I would say, the first few years. To be like, ‘okay, she’s ordering me around or telling me to do this, but not as my mom,'” Khloé said. “Because we would be defensive, or like, ‘what are you doing?'”

With Kris becoming the manager of Khloé and her sisters, the family had to learn to create boundaries around their new roles and jobs. “Sometimes if I wanted to talk to you about manager stuff, you would be defensive,” she reminded her. “Or, you would want to talk about work when we’re at dinner, and I’m like, ‘No, like, that’s not what I want to do right now.'”

While Khloé doesn’t want people to hold them up as a model for families working together, she recognizes how much easier things became when she could separate ‘Mom’ from ‘Momager.’ “I had to put you in two different categories until, I think, our relationship really became very seamless once I had kids,” Khloé said. “And it was always a great relationship, but the management mom role was always very hard for me,” she added.
