HGTV seems to be cleaning house. June 2025 has been a shocking month for the network’s fans and stars, from the sudden death of its head of content, Loren Ruch, to the surprise cancellation of multiple shows.
The latest show to hit the chopping block is longtime HGTV contractor Izzy Battres’ series “Izzy Does It,” which premiered in February. When a fan asked Battres on Instagram whether a second season was in the works, he replied on June 23, “Unfortunately no Season 2 but we’re truly, thankful for everyone watching and supporting us!!”
Battres, who appeared for years on “Flip or Flop” with Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haack, took the high road in his comment section, simply thanking fans for watching. In another comment, he wrote, “No Season 2 but we’re so grateful for all the love you’ve shown us!!”
With multiple shows getting cut in recent days, fans are rallying around the beloved stars, with some pointing to diversity as the common theme among the shows not getting renewed. And they’re not the only ones making that claim.
Keith Bynum Hints That More ‘Crazy’ Changes Are Coming to HGTV
In addition to “Izzy Does It” disappearing from HGTV, Keith Bynum stunned fans on June 17 by revealing that although his show “Bargain Block” had been greenlit in December for a fifth season, HGTV withdrew its renewal in February. He did say the final four episodes of season four will air in August.
Then, on June 24, Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson announced that the network had also decided not to renew their show, “Married to Real Estate,” for a fifth season.
These surprising changes come on the heels of many fans questioning why HGTV hasn’t renewed designer Michel Smith Boyd’s one-season show “Luxe For Less” since he and Alison Victoria won “Rock the Block” in May, making him the only person to win the top-rated competition twice. An online petition was even started to drum up support for a renewal of his series.
On June 26, Bynum posted a quick video in his Instagram Stories as he sat in his car at a gas station, hinting that the surprising changes at HGTV are not over.
“So now that y’all are seeing some of what’s playing out, just wait till you hear what’s next,” Bynum said. “Uh, it’s kinda crazy. But if you are not a straight, CIS trad wife with a thick husband, Miley you in danger, girl.”
Fans Are Also Questioning Motives Behind HGTV Show Cancellations
Even before Bynum’s video, many fans had begun to point out that a common theme among the non-renewals was the diversity of the personalities. Bynum and his co-star Evan Thomas are a gay couple who’ve been together for a dozen years and their longtime real estate agent on the show, Shea Hicks Whitfield, is Black. Meanwhile, Battres is Hispanic, Sherrod and Jackson were the only Black family on HGTV with their three daughters, and Boyd is also Black.
When “Rock the Block” host Ty Pennington responded to Sherrod’s post, writing that he was “seriously shocked” by their show’s cancellation, one fan wrote, “Keith and Evan, Egypt and Mike. I see a pattern. Not ok.”
Someone replied, “I 100% see it too! My question is this: did politics finally invade @hgtv? Is that why the gay couple and the black couple have been cancelled? HGTV has some serious questions to answer if you ask me.”
“I personally think they are getting rid of shows that include diversity atp smh,” another wrote.
Sherrod has previously complained that being the only Black family on HGTV was an uphill battle as they tried to secure media coverage, which is critical for drawing in viewers.
In a since-deleted Instagram post on May 15, she wrote, “”We’re one of the very few positive shows about Black families on television. And yet, we’re constantly overlooked—left out of the press, the covers, the licensing deals, the invites. We don’t get equal treatment. We don’t get equal protection. We have to fight for every inch to protect our narrative. Even from BIPOC media.”
HGTV did previously announce that a new show, “Condemned” would premiere in late 2025, featuring a Black father-daughter duo renovating houses in Detroit. The network has not replied to EntertainmentNow’s requests for comment.
