‘Rock the Block’: the Competition Heats Up

Episode five of “Rock the Block” is about to drop. And with only three episodes to go, season six of HGTV’s most popular competition show, “Rock the Block” is anybody’s game.

All four teams each have one win under their belts. And all four are running out of money heading into episode five, which airs Monday, May 12 at 9:00p.m.

HGTV says episode five is titled, “This Is Where We Have Fun.” The teams will be tasked with taking on their homes’ lower levels, including unfinished spaces and kitchenettes.

And to add to the drama, the teams are still recovering from an exhausting challenge in episode four.

Last week’s episode four was titled “Pull Design Outta Your Booty.”

HGTV described the episode like this: “Ty Pennington challenges the teams with their toughest obstacle yet: transform a bonus loft and staircase in only 48 hours. All work and no sleep pushes the teams’ creativity, and, in a twist, the teams judge each other’s spaces and pick a winner.”

Each of the teams got assigned a different theme. Alison Victoria and Michel Smith Boyd were tasked with making an office space. Jonathan Knight, who was flying solo while brother Jordan was away, took on a wellness and relaxation zone. Chelsea and Cole DeBoer got stuck with a gaming/tech space- the one choice they did NOT want. And Kamohai and Tristyn Kalama created a kid zone.

While the Kalamas started the episode as the only team without a win, they didn’t end it that way, taking the prize and getting an extra $4,500 to use in the episode five challenge.

Season Six’s Twists and Turns Are a Hit With Fans

HGTV has thrown a few wrenches at designers, adding some new twists and turns to the competition for its sixth go round.

And so far, fans are loving it.

According to a press release from HGTV parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, the season six debut was the highest rated season premiere on HGTV since 2023!

There are essentially three big changes.

One: for the first time ever, season six is pitting two teams who have been around the block a time or two (the veterans) against teams who are the new kids on the block (rookies).

Two: A scoreboard pits the two veteran teams against the two rookie teams. When one set of vets wins, not only do they get a $3,000 bonus to use in the next challenge, but also their counterparts score a $1,500 bonus. And the same goes when a rookie team wins. (Except in episode four, when the Kalamas got the full $4,500.)

Three: This season, guest judges don’t know whose house they’re looking at. In seasons past, the teams have toured the house with the judges. But this time, they go in with no information on whose house is whose. The exception: in episode four, the teams all judged each other. No guest judge was brought in.

But for episode five, “Battle on the Mountain” and “100 Day Hotel Challenge” star Kim Myles will be the one handing down the decision.
