‘The Property Brothers’ Swap City Life for Ranch Living in HGTV’s ‘Chasing the West’

Drew and Jonathan Scott are heading back to their roots—and this time, they’re taking viewers along for the ride. The “Property Brothers” stars are swapping sleek city renovations for wide-open pastures in their new HGTV series, “Chasing the West.” The show follows families as they leave behind their urban lives in hopes of building a future on the land—something the Scott brothers know plenty about from experience.

Drew and Jonathan Scott: From the Ranch to Reality TV

Before they became household names on HGTV, Drew and Jonathan Scott grew up surrounded by farmland and hard work. In an interview with PopCulture.com, the brothers opened up about how their rural childhood shaped them—and how that perspective plays into their new show.

The brothers spent their early years on both a farm in the Pacific Northwest and their family ranch in Alberta, Canada, where chores were a part of daily life.

“With 160 acres, there’s always fences that need to be mended or painted, or animals that are sick, or something that’s happening,” Jonathan recalled. “You know, you learn about hard work and you get that work ethic young, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Drew, who shares two children—son Parker and daughter Piper—with wife Linda Phan, added that he and his family hope to return to that way of life one day. “At some point, we’d love to move out of the city and really be in touch with nature,” he said.

Jonathan joked that he often tells fiancée Zooey Deschanel’s kids the classic tale of walking uphill both ways to school—but in his case, it’s actually true. “Even in the winter, we’d saddle up the horses and ride into town for groceries,” he said.

The ‘Property Brothers’ Stars Are Helping Families Chase Their Dreams

In “Chasing the West,” Drew and Jonathan help families determine whether they’re truly ready for the ranch life. That includes more than just touring beautiful properties—it also means facing the realities of what it takes to survive and thrive on the land.

“These families who have decided to leave the city, what a huge life change and a big decision that they’re making,” Jonathan said. “We wanted to support them, not just by showing them properties, but by being honest and saying, ‘I don’t think you’re taking this part of it seriously enough.’”

While the series features lighthearted moments, Drew emphasized that the stakes are real. “If you’ve ever watched HGTV and wanted to yell at the screen because of homeowners’ decisions, you’ll have plenty of those moments watching this show,” he teased. “But hopefully we can guide them in a slightly better direction.”

The Scotts hope “Chasing the West” prompts viewers to reassess their priorities. “The cost and pace of city life just keep climbing,” Jonathan said. “My hope is that audiences think about what’s really important in life.”

“For us, it’s the kids,” he continued. “We want them to have positive memories and creative freedom. If a big life change is what it takes to give them that, maybe this is the inspiration people need.”

“Chasing the West” premieres Wednesday, July 30, at 9 p.m. ET on HGTV.
