Why ‘Bargain Block’ Stars Keith Bynum & Evan Thomas Are Rarely in Detroit Anymore

If Keith Bynum and Evan Thomas aren’t busy renovating homes for a new season of “Bargain Block,” the HGTV stars are rarely in Detroit anymore, Bynum admitted in his Instagram Stories on February 6, 2025.

The couple, who have been together nearly a dozen years, moved to Motor City in 2017 to transform rundown neighborhoods, which inspired their hit TV show. But they’re in such high demand around the U.S. that the “forever home” they renovated for themselves in Detroit has begun to feel like a vacation spot, Bynum said.

While conducting a Q&A with fans via his Instagram Stories, Bynum was asked by one to name his favorite place to vacation.

“My favorite place to vacation has become my house,” he admitted. “I travel so much for work that I really love just being able to come home for a few days. Like today and tomorrow I will be at home and that’s kind of a rarity. So it feels like a vacation almost.”

“Evan made a fancy dinner,” he continued. “We had a really lovely, just like, good time. So it’s like being on vacation at your house when you travel all the time.”

In late January, Bynum and Thomas were in Las Vegas to showcase their products at the Las Vegas Market, but reserved a day to go hiking, tagging a carousel of Instagram photos with nearby Lake Mead national park.

Bynum also indicated in his Stories on February 6 that he and Thomas would soon be heading back to New Orleans, where they filmed a spin-off series — “Bargain Block: New Orleans” — that aired as part of their show’s fourth season in the fall of 2024.

“We’re getting ready to start our next project in New Orleans,” he said. “And it’s in the Gentilly neighborhood this time, so I am very excited. It’s a really cute part of the city.”

Bynum and Thomas also own a cabin in northern Michigan on Beaver Island, which they purchased in August 2023. In an Instagram post at the time, Bynum wrote, “To say we’re excited is a massive understatement lol”

The couple spent Christmas there, sharing multiple photos from their chilly holiday getaway. Because their property is on an island, it takes some effort to get there, Bynum admitted in his February 6 Instagram Stories.

“There’s a ferry that goes to Beaver Island for part of the year, like three seasons of the year,” he explained. “But we don’t normally have two and a half hours to kill, so we fly over on a little six seater.”

“But there’s multiple ways to get there,” he added. “Maybe take a boat or a jet ski!”
