HGTV’s Kamohai Kalama Moved to Tears Over Man’s Video For Him

When Kamohai Kalama isn’t renovating homes and filming his HGTV show “Renovation Aloha” with his wife, Tristyn, he spends his days mentoring aspiring real estate investors in Hawaii. The Kalamas worked their way out of deep debt by flipping homes and now teach others how to do the same.

On March 13, 2025, one of those mentees, Kala Gomes, posted a gratitude video on social media that Kalama says “brought tears to my eyes.”

“I love you brother,” Gomes wrote in the caption to his video for Kalama. “You helped change the course of my life more than you know. There’s so many more areas in my life that you have impacted that I’d love to mention but the video would be as long as a movie. . You not only helped me. You helped all the people that I’ve helped in a way, and there’s a bunch of them.”

Man Says Kamohai Kalama Taught Him to Never Give Up

Gomes, who now runs G7 Real Estate Solutions in Honolulu, began his video by sharing that he was celebrating the 8th anniversary of his sobriety and said, “God gave me specific instructions to come on here and honor a man that really impacted my life. His name is Kamohai Kalama. He not only helped me do my first flip, he also created a mindset in me: if I never, ever give up, I will never, ever fail.”

“He not only helped me learn real estate,” Gomes continued with a smile. “In a way, he also taught me how to flip people. So I kind of take the same things that he taught me how to do in real estate, and I use it in my ministry. I use it to reconstruct people, remodel people. I help them to get their families back, I help them to get their life back, I help them to get closer to God.”

“So, Kamohai, you’re not only flipping homes, brother — you’re flipping people,” Gomes concluded.

Clearly moved by Gomes’ words, Kalama shared the video in his Instagram Stories and wrote, “You just never know how your words or actions will effect someone. Kala, mahalo. Felt this deeply and brought tears to my eyes and to my families.”

“Your words fill my heart and mind to keep reaching for greatness and pray for Gods will to be done,” Kalama continued. “This meant more to me than Kala will ever know. If you feel called to share words of encouragement or your story of inspiration, and life up someone else, do it. You never know who or how it will help or effect someone else.”

Kalama added, “Love this, ‘your not just flipping houses, your flipping people.’ 😢🙏”

Tristyn & Kamohai Kalama Went From $80,000 Debt to Running 7-Figure Business

Before getting into real estate investing, the Kalamas, whose second season of “Renovation Aloha” debuted on February 18, were running three family-run stores and managing a non-profit. But they couldn’t keep up with the cost of living, they told TV Insider in 2024, so they learned how to flip homes and hoped their investments would pay off.

Married with two kids, the Kalamas started flipping homes on the island of O’ahu in 2018, focused on using the bones or framing of mostly unlivable properties to create homes for single and multi-generational families. According to the couple’s website, they went from $80,000 in debt to running a seven-figure real estate business.

“When we got started, at first it was like, we were just trying to crawl out of a hole,” Kamohai told Hawaii News Now. “But it was because we wanted to live here, we wanted to thrive here. And so the mission now is now that we can buy these properties and control it, we can also sell it to people that we want to, right? So we’re definitely trying to keep as many local families here as possible.”

“Renovation Aloha” airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern time on HGTV. The Kalamas will also compete on the sixth season of “Rock the Block,” which premieres on April 14.
