Though they still have no plans to marry, it’s clear all is well between HGTV star Jonathan Scott and his fiancée, actress Zooey Deschanel. Engaged since August 2023, the couple’s sweet connection was on full display during a date night at the Lakers game on January 2, 2025.
The duo took selfies at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena, sat courtside with friends, and smiled for the Jumbotron camera in what Deschanel wrote on Instagram was her first professional basketball game.
At one point, cameras caught Deschanel flinching at the action on the court and trying to cover her face as Scott offered a protective embrace. That photo in particular, featured in her post, has fans swooning.

Over 200,000 fans liked Deschanel’s post, with many commenting on how much they loved seeing her “Property Brothers” beau there to comfort and protect her at the game, wrapping one arm around her shoulder and putting his other hand in her lap, ready to guard her.
“Such a fun night,” Scott wrote in the comment section of her post. “And I’ve gotchu 😂”
Celebrity fitness coach Mary Helen Bowers wrote, “I love the one where you look genuinely scared and he is protecting you! ❤️🥰”

In response to Deschanel’s caption — “Baby’s first basketball game (me I’m the baby)” — many fans of her former sitcom, “New Girl,” jokingly corrected her, referencing the 2014 episode titled “Basketsball,” in which her character (Jessica Day) pretended to be a fan of the Pistons in hopes of befriending Damon Wayons Jr’s character, Coach.
“Sorry i think you mean basketsball,” one fan wrote on her post, echoing many others’ cute corrective comments.
Others joked that it wasn’t possible that the Lakers matchup against the Portland Trailblazers was Deschanel’s first basketball game, given that Jess Day’s roommate on “New Girl” was a former basketball pro who played abroad in Latvia.

Deschanel’s post featuring photos from the Lakers game was one of several she shared over the holidays that showcased her relationship with Scott, whom she met — along with his twin brother and fellow HGTV star Drew Scott — while filming “Carpool Karaoke” in 2019.
One post featured a slow-motion video of the couple shooting confetti and kissing at midnight on New Year’s Eve as Samuel Jackson danced next to them.
Another post, uploaded on December 26, featured a photo of them dressed up at a Christmas party as she looked at Scott with a joyful expression.
Scott proposed to Deschanel at his favorite castle in Scotland, where his dad hails from, with help from her two kids from a previous marriage to Jacob Pechenik — Elsie, 9, and Charlie, 7. Prior to their engagement, the couple bought and renovated an $11.7 million home in L.A. they call “The Park House.”
But they’ve both been so busy, they have not yet planned their wedding. In an interview with People published on January 1, Scott said, “I can guarantee you we have done absolutely 0% more work (on planning). We’ve just had a lot of things going on. Maybe that’ll be my New Year’s resolution — we’ve got to get this wedding figured out.”
