Jonathan and Drew Scott‘s early career ambitions were very different from starring on an HGTV home renovation show, but they ultimately became the “Property Brothers.” Drew shared their origin story — and their “wild ride” to stardom.
Drew & Jonathan Scott Were Early Entrepreneurs
On April 15, Drew took to Instagram to give the timeline of their journey to HGTV fame. “What a wild ride it’s been with @jonathanscott! #PropertyBrothers,” he noted in the caption.
He kicked it off with some early childhood photos, including one of them on a horse, noting that they grew up on a cattle ranch. He explained that it “helped foster our love of nature and a strong work ethic.”
Drew added, “I still have fond memories of ranch life but definitely don’t miss the chores that come with it!”
He also shared a picture of their first business when he and Jonathan were just 7 years old, noting, “We caught the entrepreneurial bug early.” The twins made and sold “decorative fabric-covered wire hangers.”
Their first foray into real estate was during college “as a flexible side hustle to fund our creative passions,” Drew noted.
“We bought our first house at 18 and flipped it for a $50K profit,” he explained.
Interestingly, Drew wasn’t planning to do anything in the home renovation space as a career. “My original career goal was pursuing acting and directing,” he noted on an old headshot. “Ironically, I kept getting host auditions as a real estate expert and zero acting auditions. A sign from the universe?”
Drew Scott Revealed How He & Jonathan Became the ‘Property Brothers’
Drew shared how the brothers worked to grow a business. “Jonathan became a licensed contractor and I got my real estate license,” he explained. “We did make some mistakes such as spending $13K for this ad to be shown on all screens of a movie theater chain.” Drew noted it was a “horrible idea in hindsight.”
Since Drew was still interested in working in entertainment, they “came up with the idea for a ‘Property Brothers’ show.” Unfortunately, it wasn’t an immediate hit idea.
“We got turned down left and right, but eventually got a ‘yes’ from W Network in Canada,” Drew explained. “I remember one executive said, ‘two young hot guys in tight jeans renovating? We’ll buy that show!'”
The HGTV star added, “If you’re that executive reading this, thank you for giving us a chance!”
“Property Brothers” took off from there, with Drew noting it was the top show of the night within three weeks and, within three months, it was the top show on the network. “With those stats, we went back to HGTV and became the largest show there too,” he explained.
The rest, as they say, is history. Drew’s last slide included all the shows they’ve been involved in, including “Brother vs. Brother,” “Celebrity IOU,” “Backed by the Bros,” “Buying and Selling,” “Don’t Hate Your House,” and “Property Brothers: Forever Home.”
He reflected on their runaway TV career, noting, “I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since we started ‘Property Brothers’ and that we have 575+ episodes (and counting!) under our tool belts!”
Drew added, “I’m so thankful to be doing what we do every day and helping families create happy, healthy homes.”
