Joanna Gaines Reveals ‘Twists’ to New Cooking Show

Joanna Gaines is taking “work from home” to the next level with her latest show.

The former HGTV star is cooking up a new version of her “Magnolia Table” show that will air on both the Magnolia Network and the Food Network.

And in a new Instagram post, Joanna reveals that fans can expect a few twists. The includes the fact that the show will be shot at the Gaines’ home. The new set is the recently renovated butler’s pantry of their Waco, Texas farmhouse.

In the post, the former “Fixer Upper” star writes, “Magnolia Table is back! But with a bit of a twist..”

She goes on, “Right before filming started I had the idea to film a new series right at home. We’re calling it Magnolia Table: At the Farm and we’re scaling a few things back this time … fewer cameras, quicker comfort recipes, and me in my favorite spot to play, create, and bake something fresh.”

‘Magnolia Table: At the Farm’ Gets Personal

“Magnolia Table: At the Farm” is a continuation of Joanna’s “Magnolia Table” series that has aired for the past four years on the Magnolia Network.

But the show was shot at “The Gristmill. The Gristmill is a flour mill from the 1800’s on the outskirts of Waco. Joanna and husband Chip transformed into a set for “Magnolia Table.” Even then, Joanna was trying to recreate a feeling of “home” for the show.

In a blog on magnolia.com last year, Joanna wrote, “I was told early on that most cooking shows are filmed in studios where variables like lighting and sound can be controlled, which all makes sense. But I struggled with the idea of it. I’d imagined something different—space that felt authentic, that radiated with the same warmth and familiarity of my own kitchen at home.”

Joanna Gaines Decided She Wants Something More Authentic

Ultimately, Joanna Gaines decided she didn’t want to recreate the feel of being in her kitchen.

She wanted to actually BE in her kitchen. And that means a much smaller crew, simpler recipes and fewer takes.

In an interview with Delish, Joanna says there will be no pre-made finished meal sitting off camera.

“I literally was like, If I burn it, we’re screwed. But who cares?” she laughs. “Every time we think about the next thing, we think about how we can connect to people in a way where they feel that gratitude, but they also feel that openness and that vulnerability.”

Joanna Says Her Kids Have Inherited Her Love of Cooking

Joanna Gaines says her children have inherited her love of cooking.

“My kids are all now in the season of life where they’re closer to leaving than they are staying,” she said in the Delish interview, speaking of her four oldest kids Drake (20), Ella Rose (18), Duke (17) and Emmy (15).

Cooking for her brood has become the way Jo unwinds after a busy day.

“I get home every day from work at 5:30. That’s when the kids typically get home after sports and everything,” she said. “And now it’s become a thing where if I’m not working with my hands in the kitchen, I’m not getting that downtime.”

The “Mini Reni” designer also revealed that her oldest, Drake, loves cooking with his girlfriend at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas about an hour from the Gaines’ Waco farm.

“They have these nights where they go all out, and they cook three-, four-, or five-course meals. I mean, he still gets Whataburger, but I think the fact that he’s feeding himself — he’s making grilled chicken, he’s making steaks — he’s set for life.”

It’s also Joanna’s secret weapon in a time when her kids are going many different directions. “Food is how I get my kids to come home,” she says smiling.

Magnolia Table: At the Farm” premieres September 7 at 11:00am on Magnolia Network and Food Network.
