Chip and Joanna Gaines are typically firmly rooted in the present, focused on “modern” farmhouse or midcentury “modern” designs.
But when they dove in to the Magnolia Network’s newest project, it was a different story. In fact, Joanna says she and husband Chip’s latest show “Back to the Frontier” is “unlike anything we’ve ever created.”
In an Instagram post, Joanna says the new series as “gives 21st century families a chance to experience life as 1880s homesteaders.”
Turns out it gave Chip and Joanna Gaines that same opportunity!
In that same Instagram post, which features pictures of Chip, Joanna and their youngest son Crew on the set of “Back to the Frontier,” Joanna writes, “Last summer @chipgaines and I had the chance to go back in time on the production of #BacktotheFrontier… It was truly incredible to watch these families give up modern comforts and embark on a journey to discover what matters most.”
Chip & Joanna Gaines Inspired By New Series
Joanna Gaines says both she and Chip were inspired by their visit to the set of “Back to the Frontier.”
A video she posted on Instagram shows Chip, Jo and their youngest son Crew, now 7, behind-the-scenes learning what life was like on the frontier.
Joanna Gaines writes, “Chip and I loved visiting these families and left inspired by the risks they took to step back in time—trading modern technology for an older way of living. We’re so proud of the bonds they formed, the food they grew, and all the ways they made the frontier feel like home.”
One of the three families featured on the show commented, “We loved meeting y’all at our homesteads! Such a great experience!” And another wrote, “One of my favorite days out on the frontier 🫶”
Homesteaders Live Without Running Water or Electricity
The three families that participated in the show had to give up running water and electricity.
And that’s not all.
The trailer for “Back to the Frontier” shows families putting phones, laptops, video games and all other modern conveniences in plastic bins before they start their trip back in time.
The women even have to surrender their makeup and jewelry.
“I want my kids to learn humility and hard work,” says one of the parents. “We want to go backward so that we can go forward in the right direction,” says another. But reality is still a shock- especially when they get a first look at their new bathroom facilities. “We sit on that?” one mom asks.
And the odds aren’t necessarily in their favor. “One out of three families fail when they’re on the homestead, so we need to work together,” one dad tells the other families.
The first episode of “Back to the Frontier” is streaming now on HBO/Max. New episodes air Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. ET on HBO/Max and Magnolia Network.
