‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ Star Shares Health Update: ‘Crying Happy Tears’

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” co-host Clea Shearer provided fans with an emotional health update in February, following a recent scare. She also shared some good news that left her “crying happy tears.”

Clea Shearer Shares Why ‘Listening to Your Body’ Is So Important

On February 18, Shearer, who co-hosts “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (after it last aired on HGTV in 2020), took to Instagram to give a health update. In 2022, she underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.

The “Extreme Makeover” star shared how she listened to her body and canceled a talk show appearance.

“On Friday night, I developed massive pain in my right breast,” Shearer shared in the caption. “By the morning, my entire right breast looked and felt sunburned and the pain was awful.” Her doctor prescribed “very strong antibiotics hoping to knock out whatever was happening.”

She continued, “I woke up Sunday morning not feeling great but Joanna [Teplin, Shearer’s Home Edit co-founder] and I were flying to NY to be on ‘Live with Kelly and Mark,’ and I thought I could push through. I’ve sadly developed a pretty high threshold for pain. While we were at the airport, I had to admit that something was seriously wrong and that I needed to cancel the trip.”

She added, “It was definitely a lesson in listening to your body, and I’m so glad I did.”

Shearer went on to explain how she FaceTimed with her doctor to determine the next steps, which involved an exam and ultrasound.

She noted, “He also told me to emotionally prepare for needing to go flat. I immediately burst into tears at the thought of losing my breasts twice. I know a lot of women choose that path, but this wasn’t what I wanted. I’ve spent a year and a half in constant surgeries to make myself feel whole again and it was too much to process.”

The ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ Star Shared Her ‘Good News’

Thankfully, things improved drastically for Shearer, who shared the “good news” that left her “crying happy tears.”

She explained in the caption, “But today, I woke up feeling better, and when I got examined, he said I had substantially improved. The ultrasound however, would be the real test … and it came back CLEAR! No fluid detected which means I (hopefully) can avoid surgery this time.”

Shearer noted, “The antibiotics seem to be working, and I keep talking to my implant to stay alive like it’s a tamagotchi.”

The “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” star added, “This continues to be a long and often difficult journey, but I’m taking Joanna with me to all future appointments, because this time I got good news. Crying happy tears sure beats the other way around.”
