Drew Scott’s Marriage Proposal Was a Hilarious Disaster

Property Brother Drew Scott may be a romantic at heart, but sometimes even the most swoon-worthy plans can fall apart.

The HGTV star is confessing that’s just what happened when he planned an epic marriage proposal to his now-wife Linda Phan.

In a new episode of the podcast “Rodiculous,” Drew reveals that while he went all-out when he decided to pop the question to his longtime love, it didn’t go exactly the way he envisioned.

The “Celebrity IOU” designer told podcaster Rosanna Pansino that his big plans included recording his very own cover of Train’s “Marry Me.”

“I recorded that song,” Drew said, “I have a vocal coach outside of New York, so she didn’t realize I recorded it.”

Drew then booked a reservation at a romantic restaurant called Piano Piano, and had a large cake made to include the character from one of Linda’s favorite books, Dr. Suess’s “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” on top holding out the ring.

The Property Brother envisioned his song playing, the cake wheeled out, and Linda turning to find him on one knee ready to pop the question.

But that’s not how it went down.

Drew Scott Reveals Proposal Didn’t Go At All As Planned

Drew Scott left no detail to chance, telling Rosanna that he arranged everything ahead of time with the restaurant owner, even bringing in members of the Scott Brothers’ production company to hide cameras everywhere to capture the proposal.

His sound man even hid a microphone under their table.

“We did a test. It looked amazing,” he told the podcaster.

Just one problem. Linda Phan didn’t clue in to what was happening.

“The song with my voice singing ‘Marry Me’ is playing,” Scott laughed. “Linda’s telling some story about something that was happening to her earlier in the day. I’m trying to get her attention to listen to the song… I can’t get her attention.”

Even the arrival of the giant cake didn’t change the tide. “She turns around, sees this big cake and goes, ‘No, I ordered the carrot cake,'” Scott laughed.

Technical Glitches Are the Icing on the Cake

While we know the story has a happy ending since Drew and Linda have been married since 2018 and share two kids together, you wouldn’t know it from watching the video of the proposal.

Because you can’t.

Drew reveals that even that part went wrong.

“We got none of it,” he says on the podcast. “The restaurant owner wanted to make it more romantic, so after we set the cameras, checked the lighting, and everything, he turned the lights way down to make it more romantic. In the video, it looks like I’m sitting in a booth talking to nobody. You can’t even see Linda, it’s so dark, she’s like a black void in front of me.”

But it gets even worse. It turns out the audio technician hid the microphone on the wrong side of the table. “So all we hear is the awkward first date of the couple next to us,” he explains.

While the proposal may not have gone as planned, the loved up couple is going strong. The pair just celebrated 15 years together, with Drew writing in an Instagram post, “15 years feels like 15 days ❤️”
