Chip & Joanna Gaines Face Backlash Over ‘Back to the Frontier’ Show
One of the families participating on the Gaines’ reality show, “Back to the Frontier,” is married couple Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, and their 10-year-old twin sons.
The disapproval of the inclusion of a gay couple on the show prompted Chip to defend their casting choice.
On July 10, Chip promoted the premiere of the show, writing on X, “Ya’ll are going to love this show!! Social experiment + family time well spent.” The comments indicated that people were not “going to love this show,” as Chip had hoped.
In response to the critics, Chip wrote on X on July 13: “Talk, ask qustns, listen … maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never.”
He added, “It’s a sad sunday when ‘non believers’ have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.”
Hanna addressed the criticism on his Instagram Stories on July 14, with a message written over a repost of an article with the headline, “Conservative Christians rage at reality show for letting gay people on.”
“Representation matters deeply — especially for those who are still finding the courage to live their truth,” he wrote. “When families like ours are visible, it opens doors for others to feel safe, loved, and validated. Visibility isn’t just about being seen; it’s about making sure no one feels alone.”

Not everyone was critical about the show featuring a gay couple, however, as comments praising Chip and Joanna poured in on their social media accounts.
