Magnolia Network and former HGTV star Chip Gaines had to channel his inner wildlife warrior at his and wife Joanna Gaines’ Waco, Texas home- all to save a bird.
On Wednesday, June 25, Joanna posted a video to her Instagram account with the caption, “Chip crushing this morning’s challenge 🐦⬛”
In the video, Chip is seen in his pajamas at the top of a library ladder in the couple’s newly added family room, trying to catch a bird that has flown in the open double doors.
The camera then pans to show the still-free bird flying across the room and landing on a window as Chip is heard exclaiming, “oh shoot.”
Chip quietly creeps up on the bird, and in a lighting fast movement, grabs it off the window.
As Nelly Furtado’s “I’m Like a Bird” starts to play, Chip walks out to the back patio and releases the bird, which flies happily away, seemingly none the worse for wear.
Candid Moment Is Just One of a String of Recent Revealing Posts
The video of pajama-clad Chip is just the latest in a string of Joanna Gaines’ Instagram posts that have been especially personal lately.
Just hours before the bird post, Joanna put up a post with three pictures showing her as a baby, a child and then today- all at Universal Studios Theme Park in Orlando, Florida. In the most recent picture, she is with Chip at the park. In the first picture, she is riding on her father’s back. Her caption reads, “First time at @unistudios way back in 1978
Then in 1987
And now in 2025😍 “
Another Instagram post shows a video of the trip to Universal. It reveals that most, if not all, of the entire Gaines crew was along for the ride. In the caption, Joanna writes, “We spent the day @unistudios and had a blast! Crew was sure he was living in a dream and didn’t want to wake up. Chip was trying to mind over matter motion sickness. 🤣 Super Nintendo World gave me all the feels of being a kid again and made me want to bust out my old gaming set and show the kids my skills.
What a day 🍄 ✨”
Big Changes Ahead Have Joanna Gaines Trying to Soak Up Family Time
Joanna Gaines has been transparent about this being a time of transition in her family as her kids grow up.
In a recent post to celebrate youngest child Crew’s seventh birthday, Joanna featured a precious throwback picture of her four older children on their knees, listening in at the delivery room door seven years ago.
A big factor in Jo’s nostalgia right now is that oldest daughter Ella just graduated from high school last month. Joanna has been in her feelings about that milestone for a while now.
In an Instagram video posted Sunday, May 25, Joanna shows Ella Rose Gaines getting her diploma. But even before the big day, Joanna was talking about navigating this season of change in her family.
“I was so sad,” Joanna told PEOPLE when oldest son Drake moved out. “I couldn’t believe how it hit me because Chip always says I’m not super emotional. I’m pretty steady. But, I think just the idea that I realize that one move out with that one kid, it triggers something now where it starts feeling everything goes fast.”
And it’s not getting easier with the second one. “How do I prepare my own heart for it?” she continued, referring to Ella leaving for college this fall. “It’s like you’re losing the one that you go on the weekends to get coffee with and shop at the antique stores. I’m like, ‘Where’s my friend going?’ It’s just being okay with the shift and letting go of what was, and just being excited for what’s to come.”
The trip to Universal is in line with Joanna Gaines’ stated plan to make the most of summer before Drake and Ella leave for college in the fall.
