Chip and Joanna Gaines have a new show coming out soon — and it has nothing to do with home renovation or cooking. The former HGTV stars are executive producers for “Back to the Frontier,” an eye-opening social experiment that challenges three families to live in the 1800s.
Joanna Gaines ‘So Excited’ for ‘Back to the Frontier’
On June 17, Chip and Joanna both shared the trailer for “Back to the Frontier,” with Joanna commenting, “So excited for this!”
The Max Instagram account noted in the trailer’s caption, “Leaving modern life to find what matters most. Three families give up modern comforts and embark on a journey back to the 1800s frontier.”
The synopsis also explains: “Three American families leave the 21st century behind and attempt to survive as 1880s homesteaders — without running water or electricity. They tackle historical challenges and learn the skills that frontier families needed to survive a long winter.”
Giving up modern technology and conveniences will certainly be a significant adjustment for the families. The trailer reveals that no makeup is allowed, and all must leave their cell phones, laptops, and video games behind.
“Going back to the frontier, it’s going to be life-changing for all of us,” one participant says. Another notes, “We want to go backward so that we can go forward in the right direction.”
One parent shares, “I want my kids to learn humility and hard work.”
Some of the participants are stunned to see the bathroom situation and the need to share beds. They are also shown struggling with farming and securing food, and realize they need to work together to survive.
Do they miss their modern conveniences? One girl says, “I don’t miss my phone at all” and another parent remarks that they are getting “invaluable” time with their kids.
“Back to the Frontier” premieres July 10 on HBO Max and the Magnolia Network.
Chip & Joanna Explain Why They Love This Reality Show Concept
In a June 2025 interview with People, Chip and Joanna shared why the show was so appealing to them.
“This social experiment is unlike anything we’ve ever created, but we’ve always been drawn to the back-to-basics way of life and loved the idea of giving families a chance to go back in time to experience life as 1880s homesteaders — without all the distractions and technology of the 21st century,” they explained.
Chip and Joanna continued, “They learned it was anything but easy, but seeing the way these families come together to survive is something that stays with you. We can’t wait to share their journeys with you this July!”
