Fans of “Fixer Upper” star Chip Gaines expressed concern and confusion after he posted a cryptic tweet about coming close to losing his finger on February 7, 2025. Gaines, who rose to fame on HGTV before starting the Magnolia Network with his wife Joanna, lives with their family on a farm in Waco, Texas.
On the evening of February 7, Gaines tweeted, “I can imagine A LOT of people are like.. ‘I bet it would be awesome to lose a finger.’ Well it’s NOT awesome.. and no, I didn’t actually lose a finger.. but I almost did 😳 and even that WAS NOT AWESOME.. #beSafeOutThere#farmLife”
It’s not the first time Gaines, 50, has shared injuries he’s suffered on the family farm or while filming “Fixer Upper,” but the lack of details left many fans scratching their heads and urging him to “stay safe.”
Chip Gaines Was Amused by Fan Who’s Surprised He Hadn’t Already Lost a Finger
Gaines has not clarified what happened, but responded with a single rolling-on-the-floor-laughing emoji — 🤣 — to one fan who wrote, “To be completely honest- I was more surprised that you hadn’t already lost at least one! 🤪”
Others expressed confusion about what Gaines, known for his sarcasm, meant by saying that many people would find it “awesome to lose a finger.”
“I know no one who would say such a thing,” one replied, while someone else wrote, “Chip, what!? 😂😂 I’m pretty sure no one has ever said that, but I’m glad you still have all your fingers!”
Another quipped, “Narrator: ‘A lot of people actually did NOT think it would be awesome to lose a finger.’ 😆 Glad you’re ok 👊🏻”
Given that Gaines alluded to the incident happening on the farm, some fans shared their similar experiences, including one who wrote, “My father in law got his finger smashed cutting wood. Doesn’t have part of it till this day. Stay safe.”
Gaines’ tweet comes nearly one year after he concerned fans with another social media post on February 22, 2024, appearing in a video on the farm with scratches on his face and a large scab below his lower lip.
“Sorry about my face, it looks a little worse than it is,” Chip said, but didn’t explain what happened then either.
Fans Have Been Urging Chip Gaines to Be More Careful for Years
Gaines has been filmed in many precarious situations since “Fixer Upper” debuted in 2013, from his attempts to knock down walls with a swift kick to careless decisions on set.
“Any project Chip is in, it’s like there’s something in the air that makes him want to do something really stupid,” Joanna quipped during a 2021 episode of “Fixer Upper: Welcome Home.”
In 2023, while filming “Fixer Upper: The Hotel,” Gaines fell — but insisted he was okay — after completing a stunt and then losing his balance. Max posted a clip of his tumble on TikTok.
One of the scariest moments caught on film was when he nearly crushed his wife, accidentally lunging forward in the Jeep he was driving. In the HGTV segment, posted to YouTube in 2014, Chip started the ignition while Joanna was standing in between the front of the Jeep and the back of a parked van. The Jeep lunged forward and Joanna jumped out of the way just before Chip crashed into the van, leaving a huge dent.
“I put it in first gear,” Chip explained to the crew on-camera. “So when I turned the ignition on, the thing started bouncing forward and I almost crushed my wife!”
