Ben Napier is definitely a romantic guy, as evidenced by how he proposed to his now-wife Erin. The HGTV stars shared the details of his marriage proposal, which Ben thoughtfully arranged based on Erin’s interests.
Ben and Erin Napier Fell in Love in College
In a People video posted on YouTube on March 19, Ben and Erin talked about their 21 year love story, which began when they were in college.
Ben recalled noticing Erin the first week of school — before she noticed him — at Jones County Junior College. He noted that he had “admired this girl from afar.”
He was introduced to Erin by her roommate at a McDonald’s. She told him, “There’s a guy that I work with who reminds me of you.” Erin noted, “I had a crush on this guy that I worked with because he looked like Ben Napier.”
Ben recalled, “I said, ‘Well, he must be a really good-looking guy.’ And she went with, ‘I guess.'”
Erin recalled being flirty with him later and he said that felt like the door to dating “was unlocked.”
Erin attended a photo shoot for a yearbook feature on Ben and things took off from there. “Six days later, I told her that I was in love with her,” he shared.
The HGTV stars explained how they often revisit the week they met. “It’s a super important part of keeping our marriage happy, I think, is always remembering,” Erin noted.
Their Proposal Story Is the Sweetest
The Napiers also recalled the details of their 2007 engagement, which took place at a bookstore.
After seeing her making books in a class, Ben made his own special book for Erin. “I made this little book that told this story of this weird couple that hit it off and fell in love so fast,” he recalled. “And then it said, ‘come upstairs to the balcony for the rest of the story.'”
Ben had flowers in jars and photos of the two of them hanging up. “I walked down there to him and he leaned down to me and was whispering just where I could hear him,” Erin recalled. “And he said, ‘You know how much I love you and I’ll always take care of you.'”
He also borrowed a phrase from Erin’s grandfather when he proposed to her grandmother: “I got something for you.” Erin explained that her grandfather “just pulled out the ring box and he slid it across the table. He said, ‘I got something for you.'”
She told Ben, “You were much more romantic than my grandfather was.”
Ben got down on one knee for the big moment and they shared, “We both cried so much.”
He also revealed that the reason he whispered was “because I couldn’t say it out loud without crying.”
