Every season, tough choices have to be made about “When Calls the Heart,” including scenes that ultimately end up being deleted. The new season 13 showrunner, Joy Gregory, recently revealed that one of the scenes cut this season involved a major development for Henry (portrayed by Martin Cummins.)
Henry Was Going to Be a Grandfather
During the Official Hearties Aftershow, Gregory revealed that they had originally filmed a scene where Henry learned that he was a grandfather. But they ended up needing to cut the scene to make room for other character moments.
“We had a story about Henry being a grandfather,” Gregory said. “And it was just going to be a small runner in the finale. But we were just trying to put bows on everybody’s story and choices had to be made. Oh, we can’t give up Allie and Angela saying goodbye. They have to say goodbye on screen. So we wrote everybody … their beautiful swan song and then we did not have room for all of it. So we chose ultimately to pull out this runner about Henry getting the news in a letter that Rachel and Christopher had had a child. And ultimately, I’m glad we did that.”
Gregory explained that after the decision was made, she realized it was better not to have these things happen off screen.
“I’m certainly sorry that we lost Martin’s beautiful work in those scenes and that’s always regrettable,” she said. “But ultimately in sacrificing that story, we realized we’ve gained something great here, which is we’re not denying Hearties the on-screen experience of Christopher finally proposing to Rachel, finally marrying her, becoming a parent. We don’t want to dispose of all of that value in a letter that he receives from off-screen action.”
Henry Will Have Bigger, ‘Really Fun’ Moments in Season 13
Gregory also revealed that they’re planning something bigger for Henry next season, in part because he’s finally done with his atonement period on the show.
“We’ve got something really nice cooking for Henry. I’m very excited about it,” she said.
Writer Allie Deveraux chimed in, confirming that the storyline is going to be great to watch.
“I’m so excited with what we’re doing with Hentry,” she said. “It’s really fun. We spent a lot of time talking about it so far in the last six weeks and I’m really excited about the story. And I know he wasn’t as prominent in season 12, but really it just felt like we needed to spend some time with him at peace… He’s been through a lot of turmoil… We just needed to find some time for him in true peace so we could get him to where we need him to be for this story that’s coming in season 13. “
