Elizabeth and Nathan are going to face “really difficult, emotional stories” in season 12 of “When Calls the Heart,” Erin Krakow and Kevin McGarry hinted to eager fans. Krakow and McGarry spoke at several cast panels and answered fan questions during Hallmark’s Christmas Experience event. They were among a group of “When Calls the Heart” stars who attended the event’s third weekend on December 13-15.
“Nathan really is a rock for her,” Krakow said during the Hallmark Christmas Experience. But, she warned fans, there will be some “really difficult, emotional stories” facing the characters in season 12.
Times Will ‘Get Tough’ in Season 12, Krakow Shared
Nathan and Elizabeth had finally confessed their love and went public with their relationship by the end of season 11. But the season ended with a cliffhanger after Superintendent Hargraves interrupted a romantic moment between the two characters to tell Elizabeth that he had news about her “late husband” Jack.
During a Hallmark Christmas Experience panel, Krakow was asked what fans can expect from Nathan and Elizabeth in season 12. She shared that the couple will encounter some tough times this season.
“We get to see a few different chapters for Elizabeth and Nathan,” she said. “We get to see them lean into this blended family. We get to see them really lean on each other through some really difficult, emotional stories.”
In a different panel at the Hallmark Christmas Experience, McGarry said about Nathan and Elizabeth’s journey in season 12: “It’s very sweet; it’s dangerous at some points. We get into a very deep, emotional storyline that we really have to lean on each other.”
Krakow added: “As they’re navigating single parenthood, it’s nice to see them have each other’s backs. I know that for Elizabeth, when times get tough this season and they do, Nathan really is a rock for her.”
In a separate panel interview, McGarry said about Nathan’s future: “He’s strong. We find out in season 12.”
Nathan & Elizabeth May Have a ‘Sleepover,’ They Hinted
The couple will enjoy more lighthearted moments in season 12, too. And, Krakow hinted, perhaps a deeper overnight connection will develop between the two.
“We get to see kind of this very romantic honeymoon phase, that’s full of adventure and mischief,” she said. “Maybe there’s a little sleepover situation.”
In response to the crowd’s enthusiasm about her statement, she quickly joked: “Maybe not, everyone, it’s all very chaste. We’re all very moral characters. No one is doing anything scandalous.”
McGarry joked about Elizabeth and Nathan’s “chaste” kiss in a different panel at the Hallmark Christmas Experience.

So it looks like things will be heating up between Nathan and Elizabeth in season 12. But their future won’t be without conflict and some tough times they have to overcome together.
