Why New Mom Torrey DeVitto is Asking Fans to Stop Buying This Clothing Item

Even before Hallmark Channel actress and “Chicago Med” alum Torrey DeVitto became a first-time mom in November 2024, she had strict rules about what she’d let her baby wear — including no cashmere.

While she was still expecting her now two-month-old daughter, DeVitto filmed a new campaign for PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), released on January 27, 2025. In photos and videos shot at Barn Sanctuary in Michigan, DeVitto asks fans to stop buying cashmere, noting that the process of shearing goats can be traumatic for them.

Why Torrey DeVitto’s Encouraging Fans to ‘Let Goats Keep Their Coats’

The PETA photo shoot took place not far from where DeVitto now lives on a farm with her husband of four months, Jared LaPine, and their baby girl, Lyle-Josephine Alina LaPine, born on November 21.

“One of the most important things that I want to pass down to my child is compassion and kindness,” DeVitto said in a statement provided to EntertainmentNOW. “I want her to grow up around animals and have that respect for them, and just be mindful of what she chooses to eat and wear.”

In 2022, DeVitto told VegOut that she’d “been in-between vegan and vegetarianism” for 13 years, crediting a lifelong love of animals for influencing her decision to “live a cruelty-free life.” That has included a plant-based diet and shopping for vegan products, from cosmetics to clothes.

But in her new PETA video, the “Love’s Greek to Me” star said she didn’t realize until she adopted two pet goats — Pip and Squeak — how the process of making cashmere could be detrimental to goats.

“I didn’t know a lot about goats until I got my own goats,” DeVitto says in the video. “I had no idea how personable they are. They are like dogs. They are just as high maintenance as children, and that really resonated with me because all baby animals need that kind of attention, just like human babies need.”

DeVitto said that most people “are completely unaware” that cashmere comes from goats. According to PETA, the vast majority of cashmere is made in China and Mongolia, where it says its investigations have shown “terrified goats screaming in pain” as workers rake out their hair for the fabric. In December 2024, PETA published a list of clothing manufacturers that have stopped making cashmere in light of its findings, including JanSport, Vans, The North Face and Victoria’s Secret.

“If you’re looking for something new right now,” DeVitto says in PETA’s new video, “look for the vegan alternative. All you have to do is google ‘vegan’ and then whatever product you’re looking for, and so many options pop up.”

Despite various organizations’ attempts to educate consumers about animal, environmental and sustainability issues connected to cashmere, the fabric is only gaining in popularity. According to Fortune Business Insights, the global cashmere market is expected to grow from $3.63 billion in 2025 to $4.86 billion by 2032.

Fans React to Torrey DeVitto’s Campaign to Ban Cashmere

Two separate posts promoting DeVitto’s partnership with PETA have popped up in her Instagram feed, and her fans have reacted with support and surprise over the information.

One person wrote, “Cashmere is from goats?!? I always thought it was just an expensive synthetic fabric. Thanks for educating! ❤️”

Another declared, “fabulous! I will never buy cashmere”

Someone else chimed in, “Torrey, your daughter is so so lucky to have you!! Her mom is teaching her compassion and kindness for all creatures, as well as standing up for human women and our rights as well. We love you ❤️”
