A Hallmark star took to social media to share insight into what she said was a “complicated” history with the movie “Wicked.” Patti Murin, who has starred in Hallmark projects like “Love on Iceland” and “Merry Measure,” praised the new “Wicked” movie. However, Murin explained, that she toured with the show during challenging life changes.
Patti Murin Played Glinda on Stage Over a Decade Ago
On November 26, Murin shared a handful of photos along with a lengthy caption on her Instagram page. She noted she toured playing the character of Glinda back in 2012 to 2013. “My goodness did I love” touring, she shared.
However, Murin added, “I’ve had a complicated relationship with Wicked.”
She praised the new movie as “perfect.” At the same time, watching the movie also took Murin down memory lane through some difficult experiences.
“I learned how to sing soprano for this role. I got to go to Hawaii for almost two months,” Murin noted. She added, “I made some of my dearest friends in the world.”
She continued, “But the end of my contract coincided with my first husband telling me that he wanted to get divorced.”
Her first husband broke that news to her on the same day she was auditioning for a Broadway role. “I barely remember that show,” she shared.
Then, Murin explained, “The powers that be in NY told my agent that I would be next in line to take over for Glinda on Broadway, but the offer never came through.”
Eventually, she noted, she was told “They didn’t think I was in a good place for it, and I was devastated.”
After that, Murin watched peers play “the role that was my Broadway dream” and wondered why she never got the chance herself.
Despite that heartbreak, Murin acknowledged, “The reality is that Wicked gave me the life I have today.”
She went on to do Shakespeare in the Park instead of Broadway. That opportunity gave her the chance to reconnect with Colin Donnell. The two fell in love and are now married with two children.
“Wicked gave more to me than it took from me, and I have finally grown up enough to let go of the egotistical insecurities I had surrounding my experience with the show,” Murin wrote.
The Hallmark Star Received Lots of Love & Support
Murin will never get to play Glinda on Broadway, she noted. Despite that, she felt “honored to have been a Glinda and to have shared this beautiful story with anyone who needed to hear it.”
She again praised the new movie and admitted she would be back at the theater to see it again the following day.
Colleagues and fans filled the comments section of Murin’s Instagram post with supportive notes.
“Thank you for being real and sharing the unvarnished truth. A beautiful reminder that the things that hurt sometimes have silver linings we can’t see yet,” read one person’s comment.
“But you were Glinda! In my opinion, you were a more meaningful Glinda. You took her to the people who would never have the chance to see her on Broadway,” wrote another supporter.
That person continued, “You gave thousands of kids the hope that they would be on stage one day. Touring is such an important part of the arts that I don’t think gets enough credit.”
