The just-announced 13th season of “When Calls The Heart” won’t start filming until summer, but Hallmark stars Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith won’t have to wait to be reunited.
On March 31, 2025, the popular Hallmark Channel duo, who play Lee and Rosemary Coulter on WCTH, will start filming a sequel to their 2024 movie “Nelly Knows Mysteries A Fatal Engagement.”
Pascale Hutton Says Same Director & Cast Members Will Return for ‘Nelly Knows’ Sequel
Filming in Vancouver of “Nelly Knows Mysteries: All Manners of Murder” is scheduled to run from March 31 to April 15, 2025, according to Creative BC, which tracks production schedules in British Columbia. The original “Nelly Knows Mysteries” aired on Hallmark Mystery, but Creative BC has the new production listed under “New Media TV Movie,” which may indicate it will premiere on Hallmark+.
Though Hallmark has not officially announced a new movie is in the works, Hutton confirmed the news during an appearance on the Suspenders Unbuttoned podcast in late February.
“We’re very excited about that,” she said, adding, “Kavan and I just loved (the first movie). We loved making it, we loved those characters, and we were really hoping we would get to do kind of a second installment, and so we are.”
Hutton confirmed that David Strasser and other members of the creative team will also return, telling the “Suspenders Unbuttoned” hosts, “It’s basically the exact same team. Like, everything is like staying the same … it’s kind of a nice thing.”
“It’s very similar to Hope Valley,” she said of continuing the story, “in that it’s full of very specific and unique characters. And so, same thing with Babbleton in ‘Nelly Knows.’ You’re gonna see some of those characters come back again and be woven into the storyline.”
Kavan Smith & Pascale Hutton Spent Years Trying to Make a Hallmark Mystery
When the first “Nelly Knows” movie premiered in August 2024, Hutton and Smith were already hoping for a sequel.
“We hope so,” Hutton told TV Insider at the time. “I definitely think fans and viewers will be wanting more because our relationship in the movie and in that world is just starting.”
In the first installment, Hutton played an advice columnist searching for answers after her childhood friend was named the prime suspect in her boyfriend’s murder. As she tried to figure out clues that practically landed in her lap, she met the new detective in town, Smith’s character Michael Hogan, and they managed to work together despite having very different personalities.
Hutton and Smith had previously co-starred in Hallmark rom-coms outside of WCTH, including 2021’s “You Had Me at Aloha” and 2018’s “The Perfect Bride: Wedding Bells.” But “Nelly Knows” was their first mystery together, and during a Hallmark Channel Facebook Live session in August, they said they’d spend years trying to convince Hallmark to let them do it.
“What really stands out (about) this one is that we’ve been trying to put this together for what — six, seven years — trying to get a mystery for ourselves,” Smith said.
Making it was as fun as they expected, so Hutton told him during the Facebook Live, “Hopefully the show goes on and on. Hopefully we’ll do more of them (and) we’ll get to see those characters develop over multiple movies.”
