A sequel to “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” is in the works, nearly three decades after the film became a beloved classic.
Celine Song, the acclaimed writer-director behind “Past Lives” and “Materialists,” has been tapped to write the screenplay, according to Variety.
Revisiting the Original Rom-Com Hit
The original 1997 romantic comedy starred Julia Roberts as Julianne, a food critic who discovers she’s in love with her best friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) just as he prepares to marry another woman. The film’s all-star ensemble cast also included Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, Carrie Preston, and Philip Bosco.
In a recent interview with the New York Post, frequent Hallmark star Mulroney hinted at a possible follow-up. “There is talk of a sequel,” he said while promoting his new Netflix series, “The Hunting Wives.” He added, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”
Mulroney also acknowledged the film’s enduring popularity, noting, “Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream. I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia … I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie.”
The film debuted to both commercial and critical success, setting a high bar for any sequel. In a 25th anniversary interview with E!, Roberts reflected, “So many people have someone that they can see themselves as in the movie,” she said. “I also just think that we really got lucky coming together — none of us knew each other before we made the movie — and we just had a really great chemistry. It just worked.”
Celine Song to Write the Follow-Up Script
Song, 36, earned critical acclaim with her directorial debut “Past Lives,” which was nominated for Best Picture and Original Screenplay at the Oscars. Her sophomore film, “Materialists,” released by A24 in June 2025, starred Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, grossing $50 million globally.
Song is not currently attached to direct the sequel, but her involvement as a screenwriter adds modern storytelling credibility to the project. She is also known for her work as a playwright and is currently developing an e-sports drama for HBO titled “Damage.”
According to People, no casting has been confirmed, and there is no word yet on whether Roberts, Diaz, or other original cast members will return.
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” was a box office hit when it premiered in 1997, earning $127 million domestically and becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film in the U.S. that year. The film received three Golden Globe nominations and is often cited among the greatest romantic comedies of all time.
