Melissa Gilbert recently had a guest role on Hallmark’s “When Calls the Heart,” but many fans still remember her for her iconic role playing Laura Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie.” Now, Netflix is working on a reboot of the series.
In a recent social media post, Gilbert shared big news about the Netflix show and praised the young actor ready to step into her shoes.
A New Laura Ingalls Has Been Cast
On May 2, Gilbert took to Instagram to celebrate the latest development for the show. In the caption, Gilbert wrote, “And…here she is. Wishing them and @thealicehalsey all the luck in the world!”
She continued, “Netflix’s new Little House on the Prairie series has found its Laura Ingalls! We are so thrilled to announce that Alice Halsey will be playing the iconic role of Laura Ingalls.”
Gilbert asked fans to give Halsey a “warm welcome.”
“The Little House books endure to this day because so many people see themselves in Laura. She is a disruptor. Honest to a fault. Questions authority. And she’s our window into this adventure,” Gilbert wrote of her “Little House on the Prairie” character.
She also teased fans that she would soon share more cast updates.
Several Core ‘Little House’ Characters Have Been Cast & Announced
As the Hollywood Reporter noted, Gilbert portrayed the character of Ingalls from 1974 to 1983. She reprised the role for several additional movies after the show ended.
The series also starred Michael Landon, along with Karen Grassle and Melissa Sue Anderson. As IMDb indicated, other stars such as Shannen Doherty, Jason Bateman, and Kyle Richards popped up in roles on the show during its run.
The Hollywood Reporter also noted that Halsey, 10, is the same age that Gilbert was when she debuted as Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie.”
According to IMDb, Luke Bracey will play family patriarch Charles Ingalls. Skywalker Hughes will portray big sister Mary Ingalls, and Crosby Fitzgerald will play family matriarch Caroline Ingalls.
Tudum by Netflix shared that the original book series was written by Laura Ingalls Wilder and was first published in the 1930s. Netflix describes the upcoming reboot as “part family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West.”
A premiere date for the new series has not been confirmed yet. However, shared TV Insider, a premiere date coming sometime in 2026 is likely. Filming is expected to happen during the summer and fall of 2025.
