Hallmark star Laura Vandervoort shared a deeply personal story with her followers on Instagram. For the last three years, she and her fiance Adam Coates have been undergoing an IVF journey. They were “often masking the pain or hurt when out in the world,” she wrote, even while she was filming “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA.”
The journey hasn’t been easy, Vandervoort admitted on Instagram. But she wanted to be open so that other women don’t feel so alone.
“The saying ‘you never know what someone is going through behind closed doors so be kind’ has rung true over the years as I’ve filmed projects, even a movie about being a new mom, met fans at conventions…all with a smile,” Vandervoort told her fans. “I remember at one comic con, I had just lost an embryo and was in immense pain… but you’d never know.”
In fact, as revealed in the comments, Vandervoort was going through IVF while filming the Hallmark movie “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA.” The movie was about a woman who adopted a baby girl to raise on her own.
Kim Daugherty, who wrote the movie, wrote in a comment: “You’re an inspiration. Proud of you for being so open and vulnerable and wishing you that sweet, perfect baby soon. I can’t imagine how it was to film ‘Miracle in Bethlehem’ during this time, but your experience shines through your beautiful performance. Sending so much love to you.”
Vandervoort replied: “Filming the beautiful movie you wrote was so close to home. It was tough at times for sure but such a wonderful experience to film. ❤️”
‘We as Women Feel Like We Aren’t Enough,’ Vandervoort Candidly Shared
Vandervoort revealed in her Instagram post: “To date, we have done three full rounds of IVF and 3 transfers. So many people have done many more rounds than this…”
She shared that she and Coates spent their first two years at a clinic with “some very low lows and inadequate care.” She said the doctors and nurses were “not sympathetic, not kind, lacked knowledge, didn’t inform patients about anything and treated their patients like we were just another number.”
In her video, she shared that they’ve since moved to a different clinic in 2025. “They are by far a better clinic & experience than our first clinic,” she wrote in a caption on her video.
Vandervoort said she wanted to discuss her experiences more openly because “regardless of the scientific fact that so much is out of our control, we as women feel like we aren’t enough.”
Friends & Followers Flooded Her WIth Support
Vandervoort continued in the comments, writing that it can feel like a solo experience because the woman is responsible for most of the IVF process.
“Adam did everything possible to help during the good and bad times,” she wrote. “I couldn’t have asked for a better partner to lift me up for the past several years.”
And while they struggled, they also celebrated with their friends.
“During this process, we watched friends and family get pregnant and have children,” she wrote. “We celebrated those exciting times whole heartedly but deep down it would often sting a little bit. That’s just being human.”
Friends, colleagues and followers flooded her comments with words of support and encouragement.
“You are amazing!” wrote Hallmark star Meghan Ory. “What a beautiful journey to share.”
Actress Marsha Thomason wrote, “Honey, I’m sending you so much love. As someone who dealt with infertility and IVF, I totally understand the journey you are on and how emotionally (and physically) painful it is. Sending you all the love and light.❤️”
Vandervoort starred in Hallmark’s “Miracle in Bethlehem, PA” in 2023. She was also in “A Christmas Together With You” in 2021, along with other Hallmark films.
