In a rare move, the Hallmark movie “Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Lesson in Murder” will premiere simultaneously on Hallmark Mystery and Hallmark Channel on April 10, 2025. The whodunit starring Skyler Samuels has been exclusively available to stream on Hallmark+ since October, but the joint airing marks the movie’s cable TV premiere.
Candace Cameron Bure starred in the original “Aurora Teagarden” franchise until she left Hallmark for Great American Family in 2022. “A Lesson in Murder” is Samuels’ second prequel in the franchise, in which she stars as a younger version of the main character. Doing so, she exclusively told EntertainmentNOW, was a major juggling act.
Skyler Samuels & ‘Aurora Teagarden’ Cast Filmed Back-to-Back Movies in early 2024
The cast and crew of “A Lesson in Murder” primarily filmed the movie in Victoria, British Columbia, per IMDb. But the shoot was a long one — lasting most of March and April 2024 — because they filmed two movies back-to-back. The third prequel, “Death at the Diner,” is currently available to stream via Hallmark+ and will likely make its cable premiere at a later date.
Complicating matters was the fact that Samuels was a new, first-time mom when she arrived to the set. Before the movies debuted on Hallmark+, she told EntertainmentNOW that she felt like she “stumbled all the way through” filming, juggling her scenes while taking breaks to feed and bond with her little one, whose name and gender she’s chosen not to reveal.
Samuels laughed that she was “just a working mom who’s, you know, putting the ‘Aurora’ wig on and running around solving crimes. But also, like, having to take breaks to go pump and then feed the baby, and then come back to set, and just juggle all these all-day jobs. Mom job, actor job — they’re both full-time.”
Who’s in the Cast & Crew of ‘Aurora Teagarden: A Lesson in Murder’?
Viewers will recognize many familiar faces in “A Lesson in Murder.” The cast includes Marilu Henner, who appeared as Aurora’s mom in the original movies with Bure. She returned in 2023 for Samuels’ first movie as Aurora Teagarden, “Something New,” and appears in her second and third prequels, too.
Henner, who’s now appeared in more than 20 Hallmark projects, told KTLA in October why she loves working with the network so much.
“They’re the best,” she said. “They’re the best people to work for, it’s a great set … I was flattered enough that they thought I could play myself in the (“Aurora Teagarden”) prequels, so that’s what I’m doing.”
Evan Roderick also returns as a young Arthur after appearing in “Something New” the year before. In the prequels, his character is working as a beat cop, years before he becomes a detective. In the original “Aurora Teagarden” movies, that role was played by Hallmark actor and director Peter Benson.
Thankfully for Samuels, she felt surrounded by support on the Hallmark shoot by crew members who understood her need for flexibility with a new baby. Director Jessica Harmon was expecting her first child during the shoot, Samuels told EntertainmentNOW, and cinematographer Will McKnight’s wife gave birth four days before filming started.
“It was just like babies everywhere,” Samuels recalled, laughing. “But I think this year’s experience will always be pretty special because it was this, like, unique moment where everyone was coming into parenthood at the same time and it was very exciting.”
“Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Lesson in Murder” premieres on Hallmark Mystery and Hallmark Channel on April 10 at 8 p.m. Eastern time. It is also scheduled to air at additional times on Hallmark Mystery and is still available to stream on Hallmark+.
