Food Network star Anne Burrell tragically passed away at the age of 55 in her home in Brooklyn, New York, on the morning of Tuesday, June 17.
The night prior, Burrell was at an improv show, PEOPLE reports.
“Everyone said she was so great last night and so happy,” a source told the outlet.
Another source added that she “was in great spirits last night during and after the improv show. Typical fun, outgoing Anne, having a blast.” And with that, people are “shocked and confused” because she appeared to be okay when she left the improv show.
TMZ reported that Burrell was found unresponsive inside her home, and when paramedics arrived, they were unable to revive Burrell. She was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be conducted to determine her official cause of death.

On June 9, Burrell posted two photos, stating that she had been exploring the world of improv. And she invited people to swing by and check out her show.
“Sooooooo… as I have mentioned I have been taking Improv classes @thesecondcitytc and having an ABSOLUTE blast!!! My class and I are coming to the end of this term and we get to do an actual show!!! If anyone is interested in stopping by on Monday June 16 at 9 pm @thesecondcity in Brooklyn please feel free!! Second City NYC Posts Sweet Tribute to Anne Burrell
Second City NYC was where Burrell was taking her improv classes, and after the news of her death broke, they posted a heartfelt tribute to her on Instagram.
“We’re are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and student, Anne Burrell. She will be missed and remembered as a vibrant part of our Second City New York Training Center community. Anne brought joy, boldness, and an unwavering “yes, and” spirit. Her enthusiasm was contagious, her presence unforgettable. Our thoughts go out to Anne’s family and loved ones,” Second City NYC wrote.
Food Network also posted a kind message about Burrell.
“We are deeply saddened to share the news that beloved chef, Anne Burrell, passed away this morning. Anne was a remarkable person and culinary talent – teaching, competing and always sharing the importance of food in her life and the joy that a delicious meal can bring. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends and fans during this time of tremendous loss,” the network posted on Instagram.
